Bunz Trade For a Portrait

charmaine kay, portrait, casie stewart, blogger, influencer, toronto

Last month I met up with my friend Charmaine after she posted on Bunz Trading Zone about wanting a Fitbit. I’ve been going to FitBit media events for years (Love my new Versa!) so I have a couple. Bunz Trading Zone started out at Bumz a couple years ago as a small group for local trades, without the exchange of money. It’s grown to thousands of members with different groups for friending, makeup, yoga, housing, and jobs. Charmaine asked what I was ISO (in search of) and knowing she is a great photographer, I asked her to take my photo.

She took a couple of me on digital and film and just had a couple developed! I was just at the office in my regular clothes so it wasn’t a full-on photoshoot, more like a walk & talk hang w/ photos. Great trade if you ask me!

Thank you, Charmaine!

What a Wonderful World

What a Wonderful World

Sean was up cleaning up tree branches at 6 am today! I slept until 7:30, I’ve always been a morning person. ?☀️? There were a few huge piles of tree branches and trunks to cleanup and we were almost done at 10am. Hustle! ???? I love being up here so much. The boat is in the water and it’s beautiful out today. ?

Waking up early here is great because you get heaps done and then can chill the rest of the day. There’s a chipmunk creepin up a tree behind me, they are cute but can be annoying. You do not want the little buggers in the house!

I love sitting on the dock and writing things down. The lake and nature are inspiring and if I don’t write things down I always forget. ?

Make the most of the weekend. Do something for yourself. ?

Brighter Days

casie stewart, trinity bellwoods, queen west, hipster, influencer, blogger, toronto

Smile into the sun. Feel it on your face. There are brighter days ahead.

What a week right, amirite? I don’t think I’ve ever been more looking forward to escaping to the cottage for the weekend. We have worked really hard since March to get it ready and we’re finally there. Time to relax.

Yesterday I had a nice lunch with my sister Queen West. We sat outside and laughed in the sun. I spent some time in Bellwoods, caught up with an old friend, met up with Lauren. We went to the Zane X Jenny Bird pop-up at ZANE for a bit. It was so nice out. I met Jenny Bird and totally fangirled like a DORK.

Real bugger to hear about the Ontario election results after such a great day. Also sucked waking up to hear about Anthony Bourdain. He was such a great storyteller, inspiring chef, great traveller.

This weekend I am focussing my energy on the great stuff. Planning the next 2 months. I have some trips coming up to plan for and a couple really fun brand partnerships coming up. I am feeling very grateful for the opportunities I have and the people around me. Extremely excited for the rest of summer. Today I signed up for 6 months with a trainer. I’ve wanted to do this forever and I’m doing it now, for myself! It isn’t sponsored and I probably won’t be posting workout stuff I biked there today and didn’t even tell anyone haha.

Sending you sunshine through the internet.
Here’s to a great weekend. ?

DONT KILL YOURSELF

DONT KILL YOURSELF

Don’t give up. Don’t quit over your job. Don’t die over money. Don’t bottle your feelings up. Don’t stay inside and hide. Don’t give up. Don’t hold it all in. Don’t put on a smile and act like everything is fine when it’s not. Don’t write your last letter. Don’t plan your exit. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Don’t be selfish. Don’t kill yourself.

PLS ASK FOR HELP.

Yesterday I posted the suicide hotline after hearing about Kate Spade. I felt sad. Her death was a reminder that no matter how much money, fancy clothes, cars, businesses, health, family, no matter how much you have, you can still have dark thoughts. None of us are immune to feeling like we’re backed into a corner. We all go through love, loss, money, no money, jobs, no jobs, depression, anxiety. Life is hard. No matter how much it seems like someone has a perfect life, THEY DON’T.  They might have an even more fucked up life than you think you do, trust me! We all go through it. We all have days, weeks, months, years when we wonder why we are still doing it, or not making it, or are we just faking it?

Life is hard. We’re constantly bombarded with challenges, tests, to see if we can make it to the next level. We all have the strength to deal, to fight, to call on each other, to make it through. You are never alone. There are lots of people around you even though you might not feel like it sometimes. It’s easy to isolate yourself, to put on a smile and act like everything is a-ok when you feel like dying inside. Reach out to someone around you. People care, people at work, home, on Facebook, and right on the other side of the phone at your fingertips. And you have me, I am always on the internet, I’m here for you.

Yesterday I posted the suicide hotline for a second time. A friend messaged me to say that Darrek Kwik, my friend, who did my hair for years, who I always blogged about, took his own life. I saw him about a month ago. I feel sad and angry. I feel sad and angry everytime I have to call mum at work and say, “I’m ok, well actual, remember so-and-so? They died.” I have a Post-It note in my closet with names of people who have died recently and there are too many names.

Was there something I could have done? How is his family? I don’t have answers. I do have a platform and a voice.  I am here reaching out, sharing my story, maybe it will help you feel more comfortable sharing yours with me. You’re not alone.

Suicide is a mother fucker. I have lost a lot of people this way, unfortunately. I feel sad thinking about what they could have gone on to do with their lives, the things they missed out on. The hole in their family that will never be filled. Did they think of the pain and loss they will leave behind? Forest through the trees. It’s hard to see the consequences or what is happening around you when you are trapped inside yourself.

I almost didn’t make it once. When I was in grade 8, my parents were splitting up. My best friend was moving away. I was sad. I had been in some trouble at school. A couple girlfriends and I decided to walk home and walk on the train tracks. We were prepared to let the train hit us that day. I was ready to give up. A couple guy friends from school followed us and wondered why the girls were going down that path, on the tracks. The train always went by after school.

When the train was about 2 metres away from me I was pushed off the track by my friend Allan, the hero who saved my life that day. There have been other days where I thought about giving up but I have made the choice to be a story and not a statistic. I will not do that to my family and my future.

It hurts to imagine things I might have never have accomplished, that’s kind of backwards but I think about places I’ve travelled, stories, all the jokes, the outfits, and hairstyles. Darren was one of the first people I met when I moved to Toronto. I lived on Bathurst and we met one Sunday night at Sneaky Dees. We were instant friends. He knew me different than most people, your hair stylist always does. He did my hair for years, we spent so many hours together, blonde processing, chatting about life, having drinks, partying. He was in my 2010 Virgin America video, we shot some of the documentary ‘It’s All About Me‘ in his studio, there’s a video of him shaving my head. I wish that he had reached out.

Please know, we are all fighting battles on our own. Behind the perfect Instagram posts and Facebook, behind the blogs, behind the camera, someone is struggling with something. You are not alone.

I went to the gym today and booked a session with a trainer.
Trying to channel this sadness and anger into motivation.
Please know I am always here, on the other side of the screen.

My Job Rocks! TV -The Blogger Episode

casiestewart, casie stewart, my job rocks, toronto blogger,my job rocks, influencer, toronto

Late last year I was asked to be on an episode of a teen-oriented tv show called My Job Rocks and the episode is out! It aired this week on WinHD TV and was available on Rogers Cable Channel 672 and Bell Fibe Channel 679.

The show introduces Canadian youth to potential and trending career paths they otherwise might not know exist.

I always like to remind younger people to follow what they love because the job they end up doing might now exist yet. Thanks to technology, so many new and unique jobs are being created in new industries.

Social media didn’t exist when I was in school but the things I’m doing now, writing, photography, travel, marketing, are all things I was into back then.

The show is actually pretty funny! I loved sitting down to chat about my work. There are 3 hosts and one of them is a little sock puppet named Maximus Fluffisness. In the show when I talk about travel writing he said he wanted to MARRY ME! That was the start of some witty banter and hilarity. The editing is well done and it was so fun shoot in a big studio.

Twitter Fronts – Content Partnerships & New Live Shows!

casiestewart, twitter, blogger, media, #twitterfronts, influencer

I love Twitter, I have since the day I joined over 10 years ago. It’s still my favourite social media platform, it’s the place news breaks and where you want to be when live events happen around the world.  Thanks to Twitter, I’ve been able to share my voice, meet like-minded people, and build life-long relationships. I love sharing random thoughts, photos, links to things I read and write, and getting the latest news.

“When something happens in the world, it happens first on Twitter”
@KayMadati, Head of Content at Twitter

If you’re not familiar with the term ‘Upfronts” it comes from TV and has to do with advertising. The Twitter Fronts are a chance for agencies, brands, and advertisers to see what options are available for branded content and partnerships.

Upfronts: In the television industry, an upfront is a gathering at the start of important advertising sales periods, held by television network executives and attended by major advertisers and the media. [Wikipedia]

Read My #TwitterFronts Tweets Here

According to the source, Twitter users are engaged, affluent, and educated. They want to make sure brand partnerships have contextual relevance, they have to make sense, and be mutually beneficial relationships.

They’re bringing exclusive partnerships for live content straight to Twitter to leverage their storytelling capabilities. We’re talking Buzzfeed, BNN, Corus, sports, BetaKit for tech, and a new media centre for brands who want to create live content. They’ve got everything covered, #onedirtydish will feature your fav chefs,

This year, for the first time the MMVAs will be broadcast live on Twitter, the show AND the red carpet. This is huge! I was the social media manager for the show when I worked there back in 2010. It was a dream of mine to see the show live on Twitter, although video wasn’t introduced on the platform until 2015 and there definitely wasn’t a ‘live’ option.

BuzzFeed’s AM2DM is a weekday show at 10am with all the latest entertainment. Canada’s managing editor said they’re bringing ‘next level conversations’ and I am here for it.

Twitter is also working with brands to create bespoke content. They’re breaking down what relevance means and making sure content is reaching the right people. Check out Producer, Twitter advanced brand tool for live broadcasts.

I’m excited to see all this roll out. Gone are the days when we need cable TV, the future is INTERNET!

I’m Internet, but I’m Human Too

I’m Internet, but I’m Human Too

Do you ever just feel like you need a break? To run away. Get on a plane. Be alone. Put away your phone. Take flight and be free. I don’t know exactly why but today I feel frustrated.

casie stewart, iphonex, telus, sunshine

There are lots of things to feel great about but with a few roadblocks, no amount of meditation, water or walking is going to save me right now. I want to curl up with my computer on a patio of a villa somewhere far away, alone. I’ve got things I want to write and I feel like I need a secluded place away from everyone and everything. Life is full of distractions and no matter where I go, they’re all around. Maybe I should turn off wifi.

I’m doing a wellness retreat this afternoon and in the middle of planning a trip with Aeroplan. Maybe I have travel jitters and I just want to leave now?

Please remember that no matter how many smiling selfies, cute couple photos, designer dresses, great skin, and clean houses, nothing is that perfect in real life. We all have our struggles, battles, and have no idea what we are doing. But we’re doing it. I had no idea what I was doing when I started my blog and stuck at it. I was addicted to documenting, I love writing, smiling photos. Most of my blog posts aren’t even about anything other than how I’m feeling or where I’m going, but we all feel things and go places. Writing it down helps me deal with everything, it’s great therapy.

I’m gonna go for that walk now. I think it might actually help.

casie stewart, toronto, blogger, speaker, influencer, "this is my life"

P.S. When I opened up Twitter before leaving my computer for the aforementioned walk, this Tweet was waiting for me. Good read. I relate to this ‘smiling depression’ quite a bit.

My dad had depression when I was growing up. My bf says sometimes I share all my sunshine with the world and have nothing left when I come home.

Last year I made it a priority to give more time to myself, to keep my energy vessel full as much as I can instead of emptying it to the world. I work at it every damn day. I’ve been through a lot of ups and downs over the last 10+ years of having this blog, I’ve shared a lot of them. Trust me that there are a lot more behind the scenes I don’t share. I’m Internet, but I’m human too.

Hang in there my friends!
We need each other and we can do this. I am here for you.
Wow this PS is almost longer than the blog post.

Turn Your Frown Into a Crown, Put Yourself in an Evening Gown

casie stewart, iphonex, telus, sunshine

Gooooooood morning! I’m not sure what’s up but for the last couple days, I’ve been feeling super tired. I was in Vancouver for less than a week but I don’t think jet lag would affect me like this. It’s not even that much of a time difference! Had a nice weekend at the cottage weather was amazing. It’s crazy how the weather can affect us so much. Did you see that May Flower Moon last night? There’s magic in the air!

Today I’m doing a wellness retreat followed by a cannabis workship event. I’m also planning a summer trip to Europe w/ Aeroplan. What a time to be alive!

Was nice to be back in the office after 4 days of the cottage, 3 in Vancouver, and the long weekend. It felt like ages! I am reallllly loving this sunshine. Makes such a difference in my mood each day.

“So next time that you’re feeling down
Turn your frown into a crown
Put yourself in an evening gown”

Vancouver: Hello from the other side!

casie stewart, toronto, blogger, celine, bathing belle, travel blogger, travel tuesday

Hi! I was up early and out the door about 5:30am, arriving in Vancouver just after 9:30am PST. Driving to the hotel it was clear today was going to be beautiful! It’s MUCH different from my last visit in March when it was cold & snowy! When I’m travelling for work I try to get there with a few hours to spare so I can relax, nap, eat, get some computing done, or check out the area.

Fellow #TeamTelus friend, Christine (lifeonmanitoulin.com) was on my flight. so her and I decided to check out the area. We walked along the sea wall past parks and people until we got to Cactus Club Cafe. We’d been in Van for less than an hour before we found a great patio and refreshing cocktail.  I have a real knack for this haha.

Our waitress said we had to check out the award-winning Bella Gelateria for gelato and MY GOD IT WAS FREAKING AMAZING. I almost always get chocolate and this was truly one of the BEST I’ve had in my life. There were chunks of brownies. I can taste this photo.

The view from the Westin Bayshore is beautiful. My room overlooks the pool with mountains in the background. I popped down to the pool to sit in the shade, catch up on emails, and read my book in the pool.

Tomorrow is a full day of activities with Telus and I’m excited to see what we get up to. I’m heading out tonight to meet the team for dinner. It’s so nice out, planning to leave early and walk.

Crawl into your creative cave and come out a butterfly.

Crawl into your creative cave and come out a butterfly.

I was so looking forward to being in the city this weekend. We’ve been away for almost every weekend since March! I got a few things done around the house and took some good time to fully relax. It feels great! We all need days like this.

After watching The Wedding on Saturday at Windsor Arms, I came home, changed into sweatpants, sat on my bed, opened my computer, and set up my iPad. It was the perfect day to chill. Tbh, I love sitting at home, quietly, on the couch or in my bed.

I’ve got a great little setup using a small table I made last year. I originally found it on Etsy but was crazy expensive on Etsy so I made it myself! It’s great it for sitting or working in bed, and as a footrest at the desk. For my mouse, I use a book or a marble board I got at The Drake General Store.

Another thing I use in my ‘bed office’ is this iPad holder from Umbra. I shared it in a gift guide video a couple years back (video). It’s $20 at Umbra but sold out and $35 on Amazon. ?

The rest of the weekend I watched  The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Video (good show!) and caught up on the Y&R. Drove to the beach with Sean. Hung out with some friends in Trinity Bellwoods. Did some fireworks, played with sparklers. It was the perfect city weekend!

This week I’m in Vancouver with #TeamTelus I can’t wait! We’ve got 2 days of activities with the Canada-wide Telus influencer gang. Most of us are staying at the beautiful Westin Bayshore, the view looks amazing.

My flight is super early so I arrive with plenty of time to explore before we all meet up for dinner. As usual, I’m leaving packing to the last minute!

Here’s to a great week.
☀️ Sending you sunshine! ☀️

Made a Thing: Little Wooden Laptop Table

Spring Style: Highlights are BACK!

Yesterday I went to Sassoon Toronto for a much overdue hair appt! That was all me, I’d been delaying getting a cut to let it grow a bit longer and give me more roots. I am growing it out from shaving my head last summer.

I met with Kim & Tricia, who I like to call the blonde dream team! I interviewed Kim a couple month ago about taking care of your hair, see that post here. She is a blonde WIZARD.

This visit, I asked her what’s trending for hair right now and she said that looks for cut and colour are going back to basics, classic looks, freehand painting. They’re doing more highlighted looks but instead of the traditional highlights (we all had as teenagers), the sections are more interesting, geometrical.

As a blonde, highlights take a little longer to do but the colour process is quicker than full bleach, also not as hard on your hair. Kim did mine in a sideswipe diagonal at the front and it was cool to watch.

casie stewart, blogger, fashion, style, sassoon toronto, highlights

Kim told me balayage is still popular, given it is super low maintenance. Something to remember is it takes precision to have your hair done well, highlights should line up and balayage takes specific painting skills.

I love the Sassoon SS18 Collection images. Check them out here for inspiration. I especially love the image below with the pink background, swoon.

[symple_testimonial by=”” fade_in=”false”]“Sassoon plays with natural hair by enhancing the beauty of original texture, functionality and colour in the hair. This season, Sassoon is manipulating the form of hair by utilizing classic techniques from the inside out, literally, changing the look of hair by looking from within.”

Lorraine McAndrew, Toronto Senior Creative Director[/symple_testimonial]

sassoon ss18, sassoon toronto, casie stewart,

Tricia finished with my haircut, leaving the little bits on the side and not taking too much off the top. She does a bit when it’s wet then does a dry cut, scissor over comb. Love it!

UPDATE: 2 Days Later

Why does your hair always feel so great a few days after it’s cut?! Below is after 1 wash and 2 days, sleeping on it, then wearing a hat to the watch the Royal Wedding for a couple hours. I love it.

I’ve been using Davines MORE INSIDE Sea Salt Spray (at Sassoon’s reco!) which is a step fancier than what I had before, and I see why. It’s awesome. Trying to wash not my hair every single day (but still shower lol) and this makes it look messy but tamed.

If you’re looking for a great salon, skilled artists, or a new look, go to Sassoon Toronto! They’re so nice and I’ve never been happier with my hair. Tell them I sent you!

HAPPY LONG WEEEEEEEEKEND!

I've been working with Sassoon Toronto for almost 2 years now! They take care of my hair in exchange for me sharing about it, which, tbh I'd do anyway.

See previous Sassoon posts here for hair and style inspiration.

San Francisco: 5 Great Things to Do

SF MOMA, san francisco, travel, travel blogger, casie stewart

There’s no shortage of things to do in San Francisco, you have the water, the Wharf, the city, parks the hills, and over 3,500 restaurants. The key is finding a few ways to see the city with enough time to explore. If I’m on a short trip to a new city, I like to pick 3-5 things I really want to see and give myself lots of time to do it. That way I can leave early in the day and take the scenic route, enjoy meals, take streets without a map, and follow the sunshine.

In this list, you’ll find five great things to do in San Francisco if you’re on a short trip but want to see a lot. I’ve also included my runner-up for street art and FOOD.

Fisherman’s Wharf & The Grotto

There is no shortage of great food in SF but if you’re looking for fresh (and sustainably served) seafood, you’ll want to book a table here. The Grotto was first opened in 1935 and the first sit down restaurant at Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s recently been renovated, restoring many of the original features, giving a modern touch to the 1930’s decor. Here you’ll find great views of the bay, the bridge, and boats while taking in the incredible menu by Executive Chef Paul Bruno. Make sure you check out the new beehive on the roof as you walk in the dining area, it’s not be missed!

Golden Gate Bridge & Alcatraz Tour

I was keen on getting to Alcatraz and biking across the bridge but found myself a bit short on time. I found the perfect way to get some sun and see the sighs from the water with Blue & Gold Boat Tour. Over the course of an hour, you’ll get a great view of the city from the bay, get up close to the bridge (by going right under it), loop around for a look at Alcatraz, and catch the sunbathing sea lions at Pier 39. Make sure you have your camera and a jacket, it’s a little windy out there!

Ferry Plaza Farmers Market

Each week up to 40,000 people visit the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market where you’ll find live cooking demos, great food, and beautiful views of the city. Operated by CUESA, the nonprofit Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture, the market features local and sustainable farmers, food artisans, prepared food, and plenty of flowers. Local chefs stop here to pick up produce and meat for their restaurants. The year-round market operates rain or shine and is open Saturday and Tuesday to Thursday.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Walking around the city there’s no shortage of art. The streets are lined with murals, bright coloured buildings, and beautiful architecture. Located in the heart of downtown, SF MOMA holds an international collection of world-renowned artwork. Around the building are beautiful spaces where you can step outside and admire the architecture, it’s also home to the largest living wall in America. Selected works include Frieda and Diego Rivera by Frida Kahlo,  A Set of Six Self-Portraits by Andy Warhol, and Collection (formerly Untitled) by Robert Rauschenberg. I love spending time looking at art. One of my friends is an aspiring artist and has recently started making digital copies of her paintings so that she can share them on social media. If you are looking for a way to make copies of your artwork, check out these artwork scanners over on hereon.biz.

SF Segway Tours

You might not look the coolest doing it but a Segway tour in San Francisco is really fun. Don’t be afraid of the hills or railway tracks, San Francisco Guided Segway Tours will put you through enough training to make sure you’re ready to hit the road before they take you on a guided tour of local attractions. We stopped by the Aquarium, Comic Museum, and took in a great view of the city. Highly recommend this one with a group of friends!

San Francisco Guided Segway Tours, SF travel, travel SF, san francisco, casie stewart, travel blogger, segway, downtown san francisco

OK, one more bonus thing to do if you have a couple hours! Avital Tours is a company that offer local food tours in cities around the USA. We did the Mission District Culinary Experience with Kevin Longa (also a filmmaker!). He gave us the lowdown on street art, history, the best food, and what’s cool/changed in the Mission District. I have so many photos from this that I need to do a post of jus street art! Highly recommend the walking tour!

Balance + Books + Blogs

Sean and I had a really romantic weekend, we cleaned house and went to the dump about 4 times. To be honest, chucking furniture into a huge bin is exhilarating. We managed to move a massive fridge then, on the way it fell off the trailer, it was so mashed up! Also kinda satisfying seeing it so mangled! haha ? We got it back on the truck with no fuss and Sean moved another fridge later in the day.

cottage life, muskoka

This spring we’ve been up here quite a bit. It’s been nice. Though, unless you have a cottage or something like it, you won’t know how much work it is. We’ve been husting every weekend since we opened this place in March. This weekend I managed to carve out time to finish a book I picked up Friday. [Sister of Mine, it was good! Toronto based author, Ryerson Professor]

Check this out, the author and I chatted on Twitter. Love reaching out after a read a good book to thank the author, even cooler when they reply!

Over the last little while, I’ve been working on a thing that’s really exciting and I can’t wait to share with the world. I think it’s important to have something not everybody knows, a secret project, a magic motivation to focus on. If you tell everyone everything, you have no surprises!

This week I’m also working on blogging more. I often chat with people who have blogs and they set really high goals and rules for themselves, then, beat themselves up when they don’t blog every day or publish as much as they imagined. Don’t do that! Write when you feel like writing, if it’s your own blog and you’re your own boss, be a good boss to yourself!  A blog is your creative expression, it’s always there for you when you need it.

Over the last 13 years, some months I blogged 50+ times and others only a handful. That is a-ok. The main thing is you don’t give up.

Sending sunshine from Muskoka. I got my first damn mozzie bite today. FML. LOL!

You’re like 9 to 5, I’m the Weekend

You’re like 9 to 5, I’m the Weekend

I am so happy it’s finally NICE OUT. I know I’ve been a bit quiet and not posting as much the last couple weeks but I needed a break. Sometimes I go through stages where I don’t feel like sharing my life online.

It can honestly be kind of overwhelming. Last week we spent 6 days at the cottage and it was just the reset I needed. This weekend we’re heading back up for 3 days and I’m going to do some gardening with Sean’s mum.

I think it’s important to recognize when you need a break. I’m feeling a bit more inspired to wrote and share. I’ve been working on a few things behind the scenes with 1188 and other clients. On a side note, the tray and plates in the first post were on sale at Loblaws, I love them!

This weekend I’ll spend some time catching up on posts and fill you in on what I’ve been up to.

Be happy where you are, this is once where you wanted to be.

Be happy where you are, this is once where you wanted to be.

I was sitting here feeling a bit of Monday blerghs and then I looked at my computer and around me and said: “WTF, stop it!”. Actually out loud to myself. I’m working from home and I’m drinking a coffee I made downstairs with the patio door open and my plants are in the sun while I look at my little space and suddenly think I will eventually need a sliding door repair for my patio as the latch is becoming stuck more often than not, but that’s a different days job. I spent most of yesterday updating my speaker’s agency profile information sitting in my room watching Netflix. THIS IS ONCE WHAT I DREAMED OF.

Ok, it’s not all roses and rainbows but I wanted to be here. I worked hard for this. I put in hours and days and years of work to get here and I have nothing to be so damn salty about.

Sometimes all you need to do is remind yourself this is right where you wanted to be and fully be IN that moment. The sun is out and I am feeling good.

It’s easy to get down or distracted and feel like your neverending list of tasks is piling up but there is a lot you can be grateful for. I talked to a friend this morning and a reminded her to make a list of things she’d already done, then she wouldn’t feel bad about the other list she had been meaning to do. There is enough time in the day or week to do the things you need to do. Some of the things I want to get done are not necessarily what I need to get done. Ex. my hair is a shag and the house is a little messy but that’s totally ok. Prioritize and manage your time, it takes work but you can do it.

In other news, this weekend our furnace broke and today we have a guy here fixing it. Not ideal, but I CAN DEAL. GIRL, YOU GOT THIS.

Feel the sunshine on your face, soak it up.
We’ve waited for this moment.

P.S. People have been posting their old headshots so here are some of mine, haha. I was a teen model. WTF is up w/ the tree!? ??

Life’s a Beach!

Life’s a Beach!

Helloooooo and happy Monday! We’re up at the cottage after a few relaxing days of sun and snow. Yep, the lake is STILL frozen. Mostly frozen. Sean tested it out and there’s a pretty thick layer under the top bit of crunchy snow. It’s usually all melted by now which is kinda crazy.

It felt like a beach outside the sun was so warm and reflecting from the lake. I got a slight tan like from my top and Sean was doing lumberjack things with no shirt on. ?

I posted a bunch on Stories over the weekend, you can check out the Cottage Story here. We invented a new game, ‘throw the brick and try to break the ice’. It’s more fun than it sounds, trust me. Last night he did a bunch of fireworks on the lake and it is the coolest thing. The colours reflect on the white snow ice and light up the sky.

Ice, nature’s filter.

Oh, Life!

This morning I posted an article from Gary Vee about not comparing yourself to people on Instagram. This has been a topic around friends and events lately. It’s important to remember people only post their best photos and part of their life they want to share. I am not showing you a photo of me right now as I’ve been wearing the same clothes all weekend and they’re a mess from cooking, cleaning the cottage, and doing yard work. Without this hat, my hair stands right up like a troll doll and my face feels fresh with no makeup. It’s great, I feel awesome. I don’t feel like sharing a photo of myself right now though, might scare ya, haha.

It’s Time You Stop Comparing Yourself To What You See On Instagram

Next time we come up here this will all be melted.

Sending out sunshine for a great week! I have a speaking gig in the city tomorrow so will be back in the city. I can’t wait to ride my bike!

The sun is finally out!

The sun is finally out!

Yaaaaay! GUYS, spring. It’s like almost hereeeeeee! If you go outside today there are so many smiling people. ??????????????????

I mean it’s mostly the sun but it could also be 420. We are having pizza at the office. Tonight I’ve got a double date with one of my bffs to the Tokyo Smoke event at The Design Exchange. We’re planning a cottage visit this weekend and I wonder if the lake has thawed? It’s about time to start looking at water pipes for sale for my bff maybe to make use of it at the cottage!

Today I posted on Instagram for the first time in over a week. I haven’t felt like posting on my own account. Behind the scenes, I’ve been manning client IG accounts but with the long, grey, freezing days, I’ve been so BLARGHHH. I stook outside on the roof patio with my arms up facing the sun, trying to charge my batteries. It’s amazing how much of a difference sunshine makes.

I wish I was wearing this outfit right now and every day after. I love it so much. It’s a rental from the girls at Studio Fitzroy.

Sequins, so hot right now and forever. I’m pretty sure my 10 years in dance as a kid are to thank for my love of sequins. I could wear them any time of day, any day of the week.

Met these ladies in Jamaica with Andrew. It was such a fun trip. They retired and moved there to live their best life. So happy and fun.

Here’s to a great day!

Sometimes I Don’t Feel Like It #15

I didn’t realize how many days it has been since I blogged. There’s a handful of photos ready to publish in posts with no words. I haven’t had them to write. I mean they’re always floating around my head and in notes on my phone. Sometimes I don’t feel like sharing. It all sounds so dramatic when I write it down, I’ve just been working on other stuff.  A whole life happens behind scenes of a blog, with clients, speaking, freelance writing, new work, family time. This weather is 100% not helping my desire to stay cooped up in the house though. Binge-watching show after show, I’ve only gone to the store 1 block away since Sunday. Yesterday I watched a season and a half of Doctor Foster on Netflix. Today I’m going to make date scones and spaghetti bolognese.

DRAKE ON A CAKE, DRAKE CAKE, NICE FOR WHAT, CASIE STEWART, CASIE, BLOGGER, INFLUENCER

It’s ok to stay inside. It’s ok to not want to share on social media. It’s cool to spend heaps of time hibernating and feeding your soul. Soon enough spring will come and we’ll all be outside spinning in the sunshine. I think of those days and feel warm inside. Until then, I’m ok staying cooped up in the house and keep a little quiet, low key.

And here we go, it’s SNOWING AGAIN…

Ways to Make Some Extra $$$$

This blog post is an extension of a conversation, an email, and a couple texts. I finally got around to it hahaha. I remember learning about the ‘multiple streams income’ concept from The Wealthy Barber, Dave Chilton back in college. I always wanted to get to point where I had multiple streams of income and wasn’t waiting for my next cheque to arrive. There’s working hard and working smart and I am a big fan of being creative and efficient. Depending on where you’re currently going in life, there are different options you can take. For instance, if you’re a retired homeowner, you may even be able to take out a loan using your home as security. A lot of retired people turn to equity release as a way of finding extra money. Check out EquityRelease.co.uk to learn more about some of the equity release options available. But what about ways to generate more income?

If you need to get more $$ in your pocket get smart about making more money. If you are in urgent need of cash then you may want to see what your local pawn shop can do for you.

Get bills in your bank, scroll on my friend!

Get Money w/ Ebates Cash Back + Referrals

I’ve earned over $100 on my purchases in the last couple months. I have both USA and Canada accounts. I (spend all my money on the internet and) love buying things at Sephora and Amazon.ca. It’s free money you get back on things you’re already buying! Sign up her

One of the other cool things is you get $$ for referring friends with your sign up link, so send this out to your fam and get them to sign up. BAM!

You get money and in the form of a big fat cheque or they’ll deposit it right into your PayPal (so you can buy more things on the internet!).

Get a Better Job

Years ago I was on a tv show called Maxed Out, through that show I learned the first steps to making/managing money and paying back debt. The host helped kick my ass into gear and get a better job. If you are struggling for money and you hate your job, make a change in your damn life.

There is no point in doing something you hate. We live in a world of opportunity and there are jobs doing literally everything from decorating cupcakes, to delivering food, to playing video games. If you need a recruiter or some direction, I used to be a recruiter, just ask. You should also consider doing some freelance work if you have a talent in a particular field. You can learn more about this on websites like The Money Sack.

Try Out Background Acting

I spend a good chunk of time doing this when I moved to Toronto ages ago (see here). Both my sister and I were on Degrassi and spent an entire summer as extras on a big movie. It was super fun.

You’ll spend a lot of your time just sitting around in Background Holding but it’s not hard work. If you’re lucky you’ll get called up to do a role or maybe earn some acting credits. Regardless, you’ll get paid hourly and it’s a great way to meet some people in film & entertainment. Here is a list of Toronto background agents.

You’ll never find us in this old photo but it’s the entire background cast from the movie.

Go to a Casing Call w/ The Brunch Store – Casting

This company is owned by my friend Sergio. He casts all kinds of reality and scripted reality, commercials, and more. We use him at Occupied VR and 1188.

IF YOU HAVE A BAD DATING STORY THEY ARE CASTING RIGHT NOW.

Clean Out Your Closet

You have too many clothes. We all do. If you have some nice ones that you never wear, haven’t worn in the last year, and they aren’t seasonal or really, really special, GET RID OF THAT CRAP. Hang it nicely to make it look nice and take it to your local KindExhange or a consignment shop. I am forever getting rid of things and the less I have the better I feel. KindExchange gives you more back in store credit but they will also give you cash on the spot.

The Amazon Bounty Program

Love Amazon Prime? ME TOO! Tell people how much you love it? Me too! Sign up for Amazon Associates and make $$$ sharing something you love with people you care about. You will make money and it comes in the form of Amazon gift card directly to your account, so you can spend more money on Amazon.

If you’ve been looking to make a change in your life there’s no time like SPRING right now!

Don’t wait for spring to arrive. Get your booty in gear now so that when spring finally (if it ever) comes you can go play outside with more money and no worries.

Weekend + Wilderness

Weekend + Wilderness

I recently got 5 bins of stuff I’ve had in storage for years. What a time capsule! On Saturday night I had some drinks and opened them, going through all my books and writing. It was just as I imagined! I’d been thinking of doing that just that and I sprawled everything out on the floor feeling inspired with fond memories. It’s amazing how books can do that, I’ve read and collected so many poetry books. It was so nice to re-read things and see all the PostIt notes on pages. Glad I never got rid of them.

I love being up at the cottage and doing creative things. I really wanted to do some woodworking with the pieces in the garage but it’s still too cold. Finished my latest Kindle (The Perfect Roommate) on Saturday then took a thick nap in the sun. It was great.

Feeling ready for this week and tonight we’re going to Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors at the AGO‎.

So pretty.

Sending sunshine your way.

Here’s to a great week!

Lac-Leamy Casino: Vegas Vibe w/ Canadian Kindness!

Last weekend Sarah and I had so much fun at Lac-Leamy in Gatineau. We took off Friday from Porter and flew back Sunday afternoon in time for Easter. Overall the entire experience was super fun, our favourite was the food and great service. Awesome local getaway if you’re in Ottawa, Toronto, or surrounding area and looking for a Vegassy getaway without crossing the border.

Here’s a video recap of our girls getaway!

Lac-leamy Casino Recap Here’s a little recap of our BFF weekend at Casino Lac-Leamy in Gatineau. It was super fun and relaxing! See more about our experience on the blog! Their Now Boarding theme runs till April 22. 🙂 https://casiestewart.com/lac-leamy-casino-review Posted by casie stewart: this is my life on Friday, April 6, 2018

Casino Lac-Leamy sent me and my lovely guest to experience their ‘Now Boarding’ promotion that runs till April 22nd. All the staff were dressed in flight attendant uniforms, they had dancers performing each night, and a variety of other games and promotions happening. We tried to do it all! Sarah and I had two great dinners, checked out the cafe, learned to play table games, hit the slot machines, played Blackjack, got a massage, went to the pools, hit the club, slept in, ate chips in bed, and had brunch in the executive lounge. I was very glad I had practiced on the two up casino on my phone before playing! It was perfect.

On Friday night we had had dinner at La Baccara, a great spot for foodies. It’s no wonder they’ve won so many awards, the food and service were both incredible. Sarah had a specially prepared vegan meal (they knew she was coming) and I went for the lamb (I love lamb, I’m kiwi!). The food presentation was out of this world and our entree was delivered each with its own server on a silver platter. It was one of the best meals both of us have ever had.

After our meal, we grabbed drinks and took some lessons in table games. Some of my friends often use websites such as www.norgescasino.com/ to check out all the latest online casino games so I was glad I had asked them for a few words of gambling advice before our trip! Using a site like dream casino is sure to get you up to scratch with how all the games operate and is also where you can have great fun gambling from the comfort of your home. At least there are options for people to play Casino games online, as well as visiting a real casino. Although both experiences differ, it depends on the individual. Not everyone can get to a casino, which is where the idea of playing these sorts of games online becomes a lot easier.

You can have open alcohol in the casino and there is no smoking inside (thankfully!). There was a live band and an area called The Zone where you can play a variety of table games with a live dealer running a few games at once. We played a fun airplane game and it was on ALL THE TVs IN THE WHOLE CASINO. LOL. A little embarrassing but it was totally fun haha. The next day we both slept in and went to the indoor/outdoor pools before massages at the spa. We ate chips/takeout in our beds for lunch and watched tv/napped before dinner. It was the most relaxing day, an A+ recharge. Our second dinner was at Arôme, Sarah had tofu and I ate a HUGE seafood platter. The service here was also really good. After dinner, we had a drink at Banco Bistro then went at back to the casino to try our hand at Blackjack (no luck!) and hit up ALÉA nightclub. It was definitely a younger crowd in the club but it was still fun. (We were the cougars LOL!)

I would 100% go back for a romantic weekend or in the summer. The Hilton Hotel attached to the casino looks out over a small lake with a marina. In the summer people kayak/paddleboard and there’s a nice running trail.

Thank you Casinos Quebec for the invite and hosting us! Travel adventures are my most favourite and it’s the absolute best when you get to bring a friend.

Hope you have a great weekend!

This post is in partnership with Casinos Quebec I've been compensated for my time and most of the weekend was covered.

Best job ever!

Creativity: It’s Always There, You Just Have to Find It

casiestewart, writer, director, toronto, creative, lifestyle, blog, 1188, revolver films

I haven’t written much in the last week. I’ve been busy but I’ve also been tired/lazy. Last week I directed a commercial, went to a conference, and had a press trip. It was non-stop go-go-go and although I relaxed over the weekend, come Monday I felt drained. I love my work and what I do but I am much more of a homebody and introvert than you might realize. I love staying home! Being a blogger (writer) means you spend a lot of time at home on your computer.

I’m listening to the Call Me By Your Name Soundtrack, did you see that movie? It’s beautiful. I saw it on one of the flights I’ve taken since January. By the end of February, I’d seen almost every new movie on Air Canada. I was happy to see this one pop up, it’s good. After coming back from New Zealand I was pretty relaxed and ready to start 2018 business. But now, I can’t believe it’s April and I feel like the last two months have been a blur. I was super sick for half of February then I had a week in Vancouver, a week in San Francisco, a couple weekends at the cottage, and few days in Ottawa (Gatineau). Where did the time go?!

This extended winter is not helping, I totally wore the wrong coat.

This weekend we are heading up to the cottage and I can’t wait. Before we head north, I’m attending a creativity workshop with FITC. I’m hoping for an electric charge that inspires me to make things. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day routine, feeling tired but your creativity is always there, you just have to find it. I’m a very creative person but I go through waves of stopping and starting, staring at my computer, into hour-long blackholes of scrolling FB or IG.

It’s easy to get caught up in day-to-day routine, feeling tired, but your creativity is always there you, you just have to find it.

You have to find something that inspires you every single day. I love going for walks, riding my bike, or calling someone (on the actual phone) to chat a few minutes. Workouts are good too if you’re into that haha.

Today I tweeted about the sunshine because this damn long ass winter seems to be never ending but you can’t let it get you down. Spring is around the corner, a time of renewal, growth, change. Take inventory of the things around you, make your bed, close your eyes and think for a minute, go outside, read your old journal, buy flowers, draw something. You control your thoughts and you are in charge of the way you feel. If you find the sunshine within, you can share it with the world.

Travel Tips: Packing a Stylish Carry-on

CASIE STEWART, TRAVEL, CASINO, LAC-LEAMY CASINO, QUEBED, TRAVEL BLOGGER, TORONTO, SPEAKER, DIRECTOR

Thankfully Thursday is here, best day of the week! I’m so excited for this weekend I’ve been counting down the days hours of what has felt like a really long week. Yesterday I posted an IG photo with the caption ‘hump day lol’ and it wasn’t until about 4pm I realized it WASN’T EVEN WEDNESDAY.

My BFF Sarah and I are flying Porter to Ottawa for a relaxing, fun-filled few days at Lac-Leamy Casino in Gatineau, Quebec. From now until April 22 they have a ‘Now Boarding‘ theme that’s all about travel and adventure. My fav things!

After all these years, I’ve almost perfected the art of packing the right mix of stuff for fashion and function. With the help of 1188 Films, we created a cute video with some of my trusted packing tips. Click here to watch on Facebook or hit play below!

Travel Tips: Packing a Stylish Carry-on

This weekend I’m heading to Casino Lac-Leamy w/ my BFF. I’m so excited! Here’s a few of my trusted packing tips for a weekend getaway! https://casiestewart.com/packingtips-casinosquebec

Posted by casie stewart: this is my life on Thursday, March 29, 2018

I’m so excited. I honestly can’t wait. Lac-Leamy Casino has hooked us up with a great room at the hotel, dining at their 5 restaurants, a spa visit, and of course, we’ll be hitting the CASINO! Big money, baby! I mean, I hope we win some $$$ but we’ll have heaps of fun no matter what. I’ve been getting plenty of practice ahead of time with Mobile Wins Casino which allows me to play casino on phone which is convenient as I can play on the go! They’ve got a whole bunch of travel activities to accompany their current ‘Now Boarding’ theme and it is going to be SO FUN. I love gambling and I often play games online on websites like https://kolikkopelitnetissa.net/rahapelit/, I can’t wait to make some big money!!

I’ve been on heaps of trips and try to travel with just a carryon whenever I can. Once I did 2 weeks in Thailand with just a carryon! I still managed to look stylish the whole trip, it became ‘a thing’ with our group to see what I walked into the lobby wearing each morning. Haha. If you want to go on an amazing trip like this you might have to be flexible with your travel dates or destination because it wasn’t cheap I can tell you! But anyway, onto packing tips!

Travel Tips: Packing a Stylish Carryon

  1. Scarves come in handy
  2. Bring a bunch of sunnies
  3. Travel pillow
  4. Travel sized essentials & ziplock bags
  5. Packing cubes are ??????
  6. Dryer sheets to keep things fresh

A couple other things, I always dress nicely when I go to the airport, you never who you’ll run into/sit beside, and it’s helpful in scoring upgrades.for your trip. I usually wear all black, leggings, loafers (or whatever shoes take up the most space!), a loose-fitting black top that looks tidy, and my khaki trench coat. I take most of my tech accessories zipped up in my big black purse and throw my Mac charger in the suitcase.
pillow, packing cubes, and my go-to iPhone charger are all from Amazon, I’ve linked them below. I never go anywhere without them! For this trip, I ordered Sarah and I these super cute matching robes and this disco laser light for our soon-to-be hotel dance party. I can’t wait. I’m so excited!

Follow our adventures on IG Stories and Twitter. For a sneak peek at what we’ll be doing pop over to the casino website.

Opening the Cottage 2018

Ok it wasn’t summer but it was realllllly warm in the sun. I sat out on the deck reading my book for a while and came in with a little tan line. We were walking out on the lake and have been hearing it crack all weekend. It’s very thick, we weren’t even able to cut through it with the chainsaw. The sound is like a quiet *boom* and you can feel it in your stomach or chest. We heard a loud one while we were walking so that’s a wrap on that! Lol.

It’s absolutely stunning tho. Lots of neighbours were out on the lake today. Families, baby strollers, dogs.

I love being up here and slowing down. There’s lots of instruments and time to do creative projects or take naps. I’ve read a lot this weekend.

Sean cut down a couple trees and I kept a few pieces for a friend and making stuff. The wooden cutting/cheese boards we made last year were a real hit.

I love spraying things with rose gold Krylon.

Feeling great and ready for a good week. I’m directing a shoot on Tuesday. Thursday, Sarah and I are flying out for a girls getaway. Sunday is Easter and we’ll be back up here for a couple days. Can’t wait to see what state the lake is in by then. 12 degrees on Wednesday!

I tried those magnetic lashes!

I tried those magnetic lashes!

The other day I went to a media preview and they were putting magnetic lashes on everyone! I wasn’t planning to blog about this but they were really cool and I thought you might want to know. I tried taking them off and putting them on again and they’re pretty easy. For the record, I’m used to putting on my own lashes. The ones we tried are Ardell and you can find them at Rexall, Walmart, or right here on Amazon for $26. You can use them about 15 times so that’s a pretty great deal.

The ones I got were a bit long,  so I trimmed the inside a little. You can see the before in the photo above if you look close, but don’t look too close. haha!

How To Magnetic Lash

  1. Put on a coat of mascara
  2. Layer the top lash on your own lashes
  3. Put the bottom lash along the bottom of your lashes
  4. Voila, they snap together with magnets!

I reckon it would be helpful to use some type of plastic tweezer (like these) to place them on the lashes. You obvs can’t use metal tweezers bc of the magnets. I tried!

Thanks Overcat Communications for the lash hookup! I wore them for a shoot yesterday and they were great.

Travel Essentials: Don’t forget these on your next trip!

Travel Essentials: Don’t forget these on your next trip!

I’ve been travelling a lot this year and have a routine when I pack.  I never forget, a hat, an eye mask, thongs (aka flip flops), multiple pairs of sunglasses (no matter what the temperature), a couple scarves, insurance, and my passport. Wardrobe and accessories always depend on where I’m going. Something  REALLY important people often forget is INSURANCE.

Millennials, I’m lookin’ at you. Apparently, we’re more likely to hop on a plane without insurance (55%) than without our cell phone (45%). Raise your hand if this is you?!

In a recent TD Insurance survey, more than 1/3 of Canadians forgot to purchase travel insurance at least once (37%) or said it’s the last thing they think of (36%).

SF MOMA, San Francisco, United States

Over a third of Canadians think they have travel insurance with their credit card (37%) or their job (37%), but don’t check what coverage they really have. You should definitely double check before you get on that airplane and consider buying a supplemental health insurance policy if you don’t have out of country emergency medical coverage.

We’ve all heard stories of people having accidents on trips and you don’t want to rely on a GoFundMe to get you home safe.

Drake Devonshire, Prince Edward County, New Zealand
Sutro Baths, San Francisco, United States

Almost half of Canadians travel outside the country/province more than once a year. It’s important to have Canada-wide coverage as well as international. DYK that government health plans won’t always cover out-of-province emergency expenses like bringing a family member to see you in hospital, returning you home, or ambulance rides?

If you travel heaps like me, check out the TD Annual Plan that covers you for unlimited trips of 9, 17, 30 or 60 days throughout the year. This will save you from *forgetting* insurance again and save you unwanted expenses in the event that something bad happens.

This post is in partnership with TD. I love to travel and insurance is really important. Don't be one of those people that forgets to take care of it!

You remind me of a sunshine the way you light up a room.

I used to post a lot of collage photos of my faces, different faces, expressions. I mean, used to as in the ‘old days’ of social media, pre-Instagram, early Twitter. I love taking photos of myself and documenting them. I love myself and I want you to know that. You should love yourself too. What else can I say? You gotta love yourself first because the more love you have, the more love you can give to others. Love and kindness are infinite.

I always thought it was fun to take a million (ok, a hundred?) photos of my facial expressions and post them. As a kid, I spent heaps of time making faces in the mirror, ask mum. Honestly, I take about 50+ sometimes before I get one I want to post. I’ve always had an expressive face.

When I was a kid, I did a lot of dance competitions across Ontario, New York, Myrtle Beach. At one competition my adjudicator was Patsy Swayze, Patrick Swayze’s mum. She trained him for Dirty Dancing in 1987 when I was 5.

It was circa 1990 when she recorded a tape about me.  Back then, judges used to record their comments on tape while you were dancing and give it to you after the awards. I still have the tape of her talking about me. She said, “it’s too bad we don’t have lighting from the audience to show this child’s facial expression because she really does deserve it”. To this day, that is one of my proudest moments.

“it’s too bad we don’t have lighting from the audience to show this child’s facial expression because she really does deserve it”

I will never stop showing who I am. I’m too damn old to try and pretend to be someone else, gah, imagine how much work that would be? I am who I am and I’m proud of it. You really should be proud of who you are too. Just be, and be the most. Giver.

In a world where you can be anything, be yourself.

Check out @martinamartian for super fun IG Stories Surveys or peep my story here!

In other news, I was offered a spray tan from Bronzed by Emily Bloom. I obvs said YES because this winter is never ending and a tan makes my skin feel great and my mental health instantly better. Also, it wasn’t that hot in California (no tan ?) so I booked it for the day after I got back from San Francisco. Smart right?

Her tans are organic, vegan, gluten-free (not sure what this means for a tan?), and I am totally loving it. The studio is above Milagro on Queen West and the whole process was about 20min. I stripped down to my skivvies and she sprayed me by hand all over with a small machine. I highly recommend wearing sexy underwear bc I am a derp and was wearing full hipster panties so my tan lines aren’t cute. I feel great tho. It lasts about a week (7-10days). Emily also donates 5$ to the Melanoma Research Foundation for every bottle of Brazil Bronze purchased. ??

BEFORE TAN AT HOME: “Hi I take 100 photos of myself”

AFTER TAN AT HOME:  “Hi, my skin is flawless”

Ok, that’s all for now. Remember,  you will never be younger than you are RIGHT NOW, so make the most of it.
