INSPIRATION: TRAVEL

It’s contagious. I peeled myself out of bed today after a super deep sleep. Was greeted by a delicious smooth in the fridge, thanks Barbie. The sun is shining and sparkling like glitter on the lake. Turned off the news for the aquarium channel, the fish tell less depressing stories. I want to travel. I know I just got back and I know I’m going places but I just can not seem to sit still. I caught a travel bug and it’s never going away. Had dinner with a friend last night who is off to England then Copenhagen and will be there for fashion week. (One day I will too.) She told me that she will be staying in a hotel called the Holiday Inn hotel in Kensington and it sounds amazing. She can’t wait to visit England and she’s equally excited about exploring Copenhagen too. I’m so jealous! We talked about how determined I am/we are to break out of Canada and move to a bigger ‘pond’. Canada is a wonderful country but I really want to do more international travel writing, working, and exploring. These photos are from a shoot I did with fashion photog & friend Lynsie Roberts when I signed the deal to go to New Zealand for Fashion Week in 2010. I was incredibly excited for my first international blogging adventure. I was radiant. I WORK OUT

Carla said we’d be sore after yesterday’s workout and she was right. She pushed me harder than ever before this time. “I wanna see more resistance from you”, that means next day burning. My muscles feel good right now, as in, I can really feel them. I love Jukari because it comes from Cirque du Soleil and combines resistance training with a dance like acrobatics. King West Fitness is a beautiful gym and I wish I went more often. I need a new bike. Going to the gym is not (really) part of my routein but I’m attempting to make it one. This time last year I was going to The Motion Room once a week. I got so in shape. I turn 30 in May and I want to be the most fit of my life, ever. Hot tub soak post workout yesterday was lovely. I’m going to hot yoga later today w/ Barbie.. I’m up for trying out any workout right now. I’m quite keen to do a martial arts workout. Y’know, a few rounds on the heavy bag. I have my green belt in Olympic style (WTF) Tae Kwon Do, did you know that? Mum is second dan black belt! I wonder what other workouts would be fun? Aerial silks were pretty rad. Next month I start ballet on Wednesday’s at The National. I can’t wait to be back in ballet! I’m catching up on season two of United States of Tara right now. THERE’S NOTHING WE CAN’T DO

I want a balloon tree. I always have. The Balloon Tree by Phoebie Gilman was one of my favourite books as a child. We used to read heaps of books. Each summer Jenie and I would join the Summer Reading Club at the Preston library. I spent so much of my childhood at that place. I was either there, the dance studio, or gymnastics. I’m pretty sure I had my first reading by Robert Munsch at the Preston library. I remember meeting Phoebie Gilman and having my photo taken with her. Authors were my celebrities back then. When I wrote ‘Jeans: an anthology of poetry & prose‘ in 1996 we had our book launch there. We sold over 80 books that night and one dollar from the sale of each went to the Women’s Crisis Shelter. It was a magical night. I’l never forget how good it feels sitting there signing your own book for a lineup of people. I’ve been (slowly) working on another book. Write more, read more, that’s what I keep telling myself. I’m a big believer in the power of positive thought and a few things I’ve been thinking about lately are libraries and speaking. Not necessarily together but in general. The crazy thing is, I got an email from Marketing Magazine asking me to speak at an event next month and guess where it is? A LIBRARY. My favourite library in the city, Toronto Reference. We’re talking youth culture and the founder of VICE Magazine will also be there talking about The Creators Project between Vice & Intel. I’ve very quickly developed an addiction to Pinterest. I got lost in there last night pinning all kinds of things I love, style, travel and places I’ve been. It’s amazingly easy to browse and stumble through all kinds of pretty, smart, inspiring and wonderful things. Mine looks like this so far: I came across this panting and it automatically caught my eye because it’s by Stewart Brand. Do you know Stewart Brand? How about a ‘Stewart’ brand like Martha, Rod, Jon, Kristen, or French? A few of my fav are Lloyd, Judy, Jenie, Donald, Matthew, and Lisa (hi family!). I stayed up way to late listening him talk. TED really sucks you in! My brain must have been hungry. I watched him talk then somehow got into Stewart history and patterns and learned about the different Stewart tartans. I always knew the red one but they’re all quite pretty. I love the internet because I learn and consume so many things in a day. Think back to when you had to go to a library or an expert for answers?! Some of you might not even remember. We are the digital generation. WHAT DID/WILL YOU LEARN TODAY? Now, I’m going to dress up in some type of amazing outfit like this and do work all day that relates to my blog and life. If not now, when?

Ask yourself this every single day. I’m sitting in the Boston Logan Airport lounge listening to music and soaking up as much free wifi as a girl can. I got to thinking about life and goals and what I dreamed of doing and where I’m going. Not like, back to Toronto but where am I really going? I think January is a time everyone does that introspective look into their life and wonders, what am I doing? It’s probably also why people get sad and maybe have breakdowns! Last year in January I considered giving up blogging and getting a 9-5 job. I’m really glad I didn’t. The last two years have been filled with all kinds of things I only ever dreamed would happen. How did I get to do them? How did I make them a reality? I feel inspired to tell you today. When I was in Australia at Uni (2004 & pre-blog) I often felt homesick. I missed my sister terribly and everyone from home seemed light years away. One fine day I went to a bookstore in search of ‘something’ that would give me guidance or direction or make me feel better. I picked up The Power of Kabbalah by Yehuda Berg, a book that claimed to be ‘technology for the soul’. I went home and read it cover to cover in one sitting, staying up all night, moving from couch to bed to floor until it was finished. I was not raised religious and this book wasn’t about that at all. It was about the power of the universe and creating the life you wanted. It was spiritual wisdom. It helped me realize that I could have everything I ever wanted. It helped me understand that I already did. As I embarked on this journey of self-discovery (I…

LET’S GET DIGITAL.

Get out and do something. Next week is Advertising Week in Canada and there is a bunch of cool things happening. This time of year can be kinda depressing spending a day or few hours at a conference is a good way to escape the winter woes and hopefully stimulate your brain. Two things I love most about conferences are scoping out well branded booths and good wifi. The later can be a challenge sometimes. The Detroit Autoshow had totally massive displays with lights, sound, art, fashion and cars. It was crazy how bright the lights were. CES was really, really, huge the conference floor 1.6 million net square feet of exhibit space. In partnership with Advertising Week launches Dx3 Canada, a new interactive trade show with sessions and exhibitors related to advertising, marketing and retail. My girl Amber Mac will be onsite filming her show and there’s a bunch of sponsors/exhbitors friends/partners of mine from over the years including Say Media, Trendhunter, Techvibes, Jaunt.ca. Some more details include: 100 of Canada’s top digital solution providers engaging free seminars Amber Mac’s Technology Spotlight Interviews show floor etc I’ve always loved advertising. Started a creative ad agency in high school entrepreneur class, was the youngest but got the highest mark. BOOM! Each week the Say Media blog posts ‘this week in venn‘ a diagram that relates to culture & advertising. This was last week’s one and it went along with an awesome post by the CEO titled ‘This is why you work in advertising.’ It’s a good read about the art & romance of good advertising, making conversations human and creating passion. Better advertising for a better world. The DX3 Canada event is on Wednesday & Thursday next week. The trade show is FREE but if you want to attend the sessions you have to pay. Happy Sunday. Just got back from my hot tub in the Sky Lounge. I like to think of it as ‘vacation station’. We just ventured to T&T w/ Barbie in the car cause Sammy is cooking dinner. Did you know we he a Professional Chef? He does private dinners. Well that was fun & successful. One last stop at Loblaws and we are good. Stoked for Gervais hosting the Globe’s tonight! Sam is making lamb and some other stuff. I’m so hungry.

I’m a gangster for real, I feel so damn gangster

I love this photo. Took it today as soon as I got home from the airport using the 360 app on iPhone. I find this city so beautiful to come home to. Have you heard of Pigeon John? Khayyamm always has good tunes and I was introduced to him when we were in Sin City last week. He’s not really a gangsta’ and neither am I. I came all the way home TO THE FREEZING COLD in Havaianas. Crazy woman! Packed socks in my bag so I was warm on the plane but couldn’t not be bothered to get other shoes just to run to the car. I was tired and lazy. My ankle is really swollen and my foot hurts. I have an old injury from about five years ago that is painful every now & then (love that movie). Urghhhh. I did however. spend the entire day on the couch (the internet). I’m doing hot/cold on it and have a castor oil compress for the night (thanks Mum!). I’m always stoked to check the mail when I get home from work/vacation. I was VERY pleasantly surprised with a bunch of jewellery I ordered from Etsy (late one night) and a box with the warmest, wooly, winter slippers EVER. They’re called Glerups and they’re from Denmark with a lovely family story about how they’re made. Glerups are made from 100% natural wool. Swoooooooon! Being Kiwi I’ve had wool slippers before but never as fancy as these. (I feel Mum is going to ring once she reads this saying she needs a pair!) Art Attack: arm doodle, healthy snacks & sunshine

Shortly before the holidays I got the ship tattoo I’d been wanting for ages. It’s part of a masterpiece that will eventually be a half sleeve on my right forearm. This beautiful rose the latest addition. I took this in Instagram cause it’s not as bright as it will be when it heals up nice yet but I wanted to share. Pretty eh? I’m thinking that the feather Stephen Shaw did will look really pretty if it’s coloured in kinda like this babe I follow in Instagram. Don’t mind what she is doing. You’ve probably done it too. Bob reminded me of the day I got my septum pierced last year. I’ve been really temped to do it again (sorry Bob and Darren too!). If I do get it, it will be a really small one that I can tuck up and hide from the world if I want to. I love when all my tattoos are hidden and then someone sees them is really surprised. Been eating more healthy snacks around the house lately. January is eat healthy and have a clear head time for me. It can be a really downerish time for people so I’m trying to make sure I feed myself good food & thoughts. One of the great things about our house is how bright the sun is during the day. It can be super duper cold outside but if it’s sunny you’d never know! Sometimes I feel like I’m getting a tan, if you close your eyes and imagine, you almost do. 🙂

Take a Different Look, See Things Differently

Had a good day working at home yesterday. Finished it off with a bevy downstairs at the Fox with Shan. My trend of winter hibernating has a bit of a new meaning now that I have to go less than 20 steps to a place where real humans hang out. Arrived there with two day old hair in a headband, huge Nana sweater, baggy harem pants from Raymi and an over sized fur. Trust me it sounds more glam than it looked. Man repelling hard. Watched a few episodes of United Stated of Tara on Netflix when I got home and discovered this cool thing from Google Earth. Check out these cool interactive polar panorama images. Nana’s old house in New Zealand: Napier Road, Palmerston North, Manawatu-Wanganui. Behind Nana’s house are these massive windmills and huge hills like in Lord of the Rings,. My old house on Curlewis in Bondi Beach, Australia. It was a fave min ute walk from the beach. I loved living there. You might love this photo, depending what you’re into. 😉 Been thinking heaps about moving back there. Some days the desire is so strong. Yesterday was one of them. The house I live in until I was 21 in Cambridge. Condo city, heaps of tall glass buildings, concrete jungle and the CN Tower. I love this city, it will always be home no matter where I end up. Check out this creepy “Like a Doll” shoot I saw on Valfre’s blog. Man I love that girl. I don’t know her but I love her style and creativity. She posts the cutest things and I really rad drawings. Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken

Spend Thursday night with the lovely Minx Raymi her mama and Lois for the last Coug Crawl of 2011. So fun. No, I’m not a coug yet but I’m 100% a fan of The Keg. Used to work at the Cambridge Keg with my sister. We were on the Opening Team and won the Airband Competition at Keg Cup 2005. If you worked at a keg you KNOW Keg Cup is a HUGE dealio. Love is in the air. Keg is full of older dudes on the prowl for young babes, hence, ‘Coug Crawl’. I conveniently had some old drunkish man buy us all Grey Goose shots, we played up that is was Lois’ birthday. (Wasn’t really! moohaha) Love the calculator iPhone case Sean got me. THANKS SEAN! Then we had a blog party. Look how early it is! Check what she’s lookin’ at. Me, meta. Look a hipster died right here on the street! Met up w/ Sammy for some shenanigans. Mum woke me up, said she was excited. Reminds me of myself, sometimes I just can’t sleep I get so energized thinking about things happening that I spring out of bed and greet the day. She said she’s still excited from the Nutcracker and tomorrow I’m bringing her to the city with me. EXCITING! Wearing new sweater by Toronto designer Valentine K today. I was gifted it just before Christmas and have been saving it for dinner tonight with my two other sisters (Steve’s daughters). It’s cashmere and leather and so divine. See on FB here. Will take some nice photos (aka with an actual camera) when I get home from shopping. Mum always cuts out articles from the local paper for me. This one was about a guy who started an art project ‘Talent next Door’ with city hall and now is working on second and third books. The articles are always about writing, youth entrepreneurship, local designers or art. All the things I love really. She’s got inspiring messages all over the house. There’s New Zealand and Maori stuff all over the house too. These photos are from the Maori reserve in Rotorua. I’ve been there. Anyone else? I miss New Zealand and my family heaps. Had coffee & fruit salad for breakfast today. I love pineapple but fresh always hurts my tongue. You can avoid this by washing it in salt water. Cruise Control: Chevy Sonic, Hot Rods, Open Roads

Woke up pretty early and drove to Dad’s. It was so beautiful out yesterday, temp was about 4 degrees and I had the sunroof open. I’m completely in love with driving the Chevy Sonic. It’s small & zippy, good pickup I feel like it’s a little rally car. This is the exact vehicle I won in September from Chevrolet Canada live on youtube. I’ve never really needed a car, I lived with parents and the beach in Australia before moving downtown Toronto. I mostly walk, ride bikes or streetcar everywhere I go. It’s my first time using Bluetooth to connect my phone to hands free calling or get directions using OnStar. Hellooooo convenience!! Driven a few cars over the last year and one thing I really dig about the Sonic is that your phone charges while you drive when it’s plugged into USB. A few cars have USB now but they don’t all work to charge your device. The back seat door handles are on the window making it look like a hatchback also has extra trunk space. Driven heaps since Wednesday and still have gas too. The drive to Dad’s is nice country-ish roads. Tiny bit of snow in the backyard. After brekky got Dad to show us the garage and three cars he’s currently working on. My Dad builds hot rods and had a chassis shop when I was growing up called “Toys for Boys”. This pink rocket was my first car ever. He built it and Mum/him used to push Jenie and I around at car shows across North America when we were little. It’s dusty and needs a clean BUT IT HAS FLAMES. This one time a well known, cool car guy (Mum who?) said “Y’know kid, you got the best car on the lot” to me. Something like…

Ho Ho Ho! Holidays w/ @ZListcom & @weare1188

Thursday night after ballet Jenie, Sammy & I went to the Z-List Christmas for a drink and had our photo taken with Santa. The high res one will be delivered after the holidays. Next stop was 1188 Films sailor themed holiday party (film studio who did Puma campaign I was in). I shot a bunch of snaps with the new Nikon J1. It’s news to me that Nikon saves the raw photo AND the good photo. Memory card filled up really fast. Maybe I had it on a strange setting? Anyone a Nikon expert? I got two of ever single photo I took. Sean I LOVE YOU. He got me an iPhone case that is a calculator. I’m not too hard to shop for I like all things nerdy, smart and or shiny. He also got me this classic which I can’t wait to read while travelling in January. There were lots of hipster babes at the party including Jenie’s ‘fake boyfriend’ who she did a national Puma ad campaign with earlier this year. I kept mistaking him for Sammy in the crowd. They don’t look THAT alike but the hair, hipsterness did it. Heaps of food all over the place. Man, I love the holidays. Shucking station for oysters. Sammy sexy mother shucker. 1188 Family tree. A half eaten sandwich is a bad Christmas present.

Watched this yesterday, so lovely. I follow MBF on Twitter but had never seen/heard him sing. I think my dream man will do something like this. The song/video is super cute & will bring sunshine to you on this dreary day. Did you catch The Hobbit trailer? Are you in to LOTR? I kinda am. I fall asleep like, every time but I still watch. Currently waiting for Chevy Sonic to arrive and I’m gonna drive that baby all around town today when it does. Found a gas card in a drawer which is awesome! Only if I could find a PARKING CARD?! Dancing Circles

Feeling like I might be coming down with something. Figures, post vacation and entering holiday season, confined to the house and the couch. Ok, it’s not that bad, all I really want to do is be on the couch with my computer anyways. Had to reschedule today’s shoot for next week. Barbie is away till the end of the year so I’m home all alone. I feel like my place is The Factory, a la Warhol and I’m gonna to churn out some really creative stuff before 2012.
