Simple Summer Hosting Hacks for Outdoor Dining

Last weekend at the cottage Emily helped me put together lunch for the fam. It was so fun to do this together, she’s 8 now and a great little helper! She was also quite stoked to help with the blog. ? Scroll down for a few ‘hacks’ we can up with using stuff you just might find around the house, the kitchen, or the garage.  It was all pretty simple and not too expensive, BUT when we put it together, it looked great! I guess that’s why they’re called HACKS. On the Menu We made mini sushi-style BLT wraps, a hot dog bar,  and mini bacon grilled cheese using products from Butterball Canada we picked up at Loblaws. Simple Summer Hosting Hacks for Outdoor Dining   Make an outdoor table using an old door.  Use wrapping paper to decorate the table. Makes for easy cleanup!  Organize your napkins or cutlery with Washi Tape. There are HEAPS of colours/prints! Freeze lemons to use in cocktails. ??? No need to water down those drinks with ice!  Use a muffin baking tray for condiments.   Raid the dollar store for plastic plates and stack them. These same items were more $$$ at houseware stores.  Baking cups inside little mason jars for sauces. Heaps of colours in these making mason jars even cuter.  Put skewers in watermelon for easy snacking. I put them in the freezer so they were MAD CHILL. ☃️ If you loved this post LMK! Was fun putting it together. It was my first time trying turkey bacon which is 50% less fat than using bacon from pork. Found that it cooked a bit faster and made our meal a *little* healthier. The following day we used some leftovers to make cracked pepper maple bacon  that I’ll share in another post soon!   * post sponsored by Butterball Canada but Emily and I totally did this all ourselves!

Skincare Stuff You’ll Find in My Summer Bag

Summer, yay! ?? Hard to believe it’s almost the of July! ?? Have no fear, there’s still plenty of time to soak up the sunshine, read books in the hammock, and have delicious snacks on the dock. As you know I spend most weekends at the cottage over the summer, this list of skincare stuff isn’t super fancy but it’s a combo of things I was sent to try out (then replaced with my own money) or products I stock up on so there’s one at home and the cottage. I love all things skincare and there are so many other products I want to try. If you’re as passionate about skincare as me, you could become a social marketer. If you don’t know what this is or you’d like to learn more, click here. This post is sponsored by Boxed Water, is a socially conscious packaged-water company re-thinking the way water is sold, shipped and consumed. For every photo posted of Boxed Water with#ReTree on social, they’ll plant two trees. ?? I love the little box, so cute. Ok, here we go! Summer Skincare Stuff I Love 1. WATER – Drink heaps of it. Your skin will thank you. ? Drinking water has some fantastic benefits, it can make your skin look really bright. Summer eReading in the Sun + Kobo Giveaway

Since getting my Kobo reader I’ve read more in the last 2 months than I have in the past couple years. ? I used to spend (a little too much) time scrolling my phone before bed, now I scroll a few pages of my book. Reading a book is much better relaxation before bed than reading random tweets or Facebook status updates, trust me on this one. I also really love how easy it is to read in the sun, together we’ve lazed on the dock, rode the sunny streetcar, and chilled in the park. Last month I accepted the Kobo 7-Day e-reading challenge (read that post here), to replace my print book with a Kobo Glo HD for 7 days. Don’t get me wrong, I love paper books but fitting a pile in your carry-on or daily purse is just NOT practical. Kobo was created to please us fans of print books and tech lovers alike. Aside from my loonnnng reading list I just learned they have MAGAZINES. ?? I’m currently reading HER, a novel by Harriet Lane and have recently finished YOU by Carolyn Kepness and Eight Hundred Grapes by Laura Dave. During the summer I like reading light hearted chick lit or mystery novels. It’s a great way to take my brain on an adventure and step away from work. A few other great things about Kobo reading a preview of a book before you buy using the app on any of your devices built in wifi super light (not heavy) The kind folks at Kobo have given me a device for YOU.  The brand new Kobo Glo HD retails for $139.99, comes fully equipped with wifi, customizable fonts/text size/margins, and the battery lasts f-o-r-e-v-e-r. Ok, well not forever but waaaaay longer than your iPhone.   The contest is open to anyone in Canada and runs today till Friday, June 10th. Enter below! a…

This is My Life | Aaaaand We’re Back! That’s a Wrap on Summer

Yes, I know ‘summer’ isn’t officially over but if you’ve been away from school or work, it’s pretty much over. The feeling is gone. Back to the routine. New notebooks, new clothes.  ✏️  Maybe a new attitude?!   This time of year is exciting, I love when seasons change. If at any point you feel meh, remember that Halloween and Christmas aren’t far away. The season of Netflix & Chill is right around the corner and it’s a great time to clean up your house, diet, friends, thoughts.  I was thinking I was on my game this morning but am an hour EARLY for something, so I really screwed up. Got Emily ready for school but didn’t get to go w/ Sean to drop her off.  Mixed up timing on something this AM. COOL START TO THE DAY! pic.twitter.com/CEoHaUTKo5 — CASiE STEWART (@casiestewart) September 8, 2015 The drive back from cottage country was bittersweet yesterday. We took the long way to avoid being stuck in traffic. The sun was beating down and the air was warm. Picked up some fruits and veg from a stand along the way.  Saw this sweet ride.  Spent some quality time on the new deck reading the September issue (Vogue of course!) and soaking up the sun. ☀️ We’ll be back a few times before the seasons actually change, the leaves are so beautiful up there.    If you’ve got the blues today, save this on your desktop or phone and daydream of cottage life….    Sending you good vibes for a great week. I know today can be a challenging one after a long beautiful summer. I’ve got a few giveaways coming up including a MASSIVE TIFF package w/ NKPR.  Share a smile with someone today, they just might need it. ? CASIE     …

The Perfect Summer Road Trip #SummerCovered

Summer is the perfect time to hit the road with your BFFs and ditch the concrete jungle. You may already be in the process of looking at a Christchurch motorhome hire company to plan your trip to New Zealand, or maybe a road trip to California is something that you’d all agreed on. Either way, planning your trip is essential. I love packing up the car and heading up north, to Montreal, or across the border. Next time, I might plan on investing in an RV instead of driving. It’s just so I can have a different experience and I’d be with my best friends, so it’d be hard not to have fun! If you are like me and are considering going on a road trip in this fashion, seeing as I was recommended to check out sites such as good sam ESP here, I’m now offering my knowledge to you guys too! I’ve had some pretty epic road trips over the years! However, I’ve never been on a road trip in an RV, which is something that has been reccommended to me on many occasions. I know that Texas has outstanding rv routes, so this would probably be my desired road trip of choice. Once a couple friends and I drove to Austin, Texas for SXSW and another time we drove and sang our way to Chicago. Another one of my favs was a road trip to Montreal, so great in the summer! There’s always a few things I make sure to stock up on before hitting the road and you can find them all at Shoppers Drug Mart. This is my second post in partnership with Shoppers, your one-stop spot before you hit the open road for a summer road trip. Did someone say snacks? SUMMER ROAD TRIP…

The Perfect Cottage Weekend #SummerCovered

If you’re new here or you’ve been around the blog for a while, you’ll be well aware just how much I love to cottage. I like spending weekends in Muskoka, on the dock, on the boat, tanning, floating, or cooking up a big feast for our guests. I’ve partnered with Shoppers Drug Mart to share a few of my cottage weekend essentials. One of the neat things about this post, my next post about The Perfect Summer Road Trip and working with Shoppers Drug Mart is, I’m truly an expert in their products. I used to work at Shoppers in my hometown! I spent the better part of evenings and weekends behind the cosmetics counter during college. Ok, now onto a few items to make.. THE PERFECT COTTAGE WEEKEND: President’s Choice S’mores Bites: No cottage weekend is complete without S’mores. Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Lotion SPF 45 – This is a great sunscreen. Dove Revive Dry Spray Antiperspirant: Quick spray after SPF/bug spray and you’re ready to roll. Off! Deep Woods Dry Insect Repellant – Cottage ESSENTIAL. Life Brand Allergy Caplets – Being in the woods can be a wonderful thing, unless you get allergies. St. Ives Naturally Soothing Oatmeal & Shea Butter Body Lotion:  Swim and sun can dry out our skin. A long day in the sun can be really draining, it’s hard work being cottage fabulous! It’s really important to make sure you stay hydrated, drink lots of water, and ALWAYS wear sunscreen. Even if it’s not sunny! I like this Neutrogena product because it’s dry and not greasy. I keep this Dove antiperspirant in the shared bathroom because aside from smelling nice, the spray means any of our guests can have a little spritz should they need it. Wink, wink. I recommend wearing this bug spray with deet in the daytime, not just at night.…

CottageLife | So Long Sweet Summer Home

I rolled down the window as soon as we got to cottage county this weekend, Toronto didn’t have snow yet and I wanted fresh air. It smelled like winter, crisp and clean. Closing the cottage is bittersweet, it looks so nice all covered in snow but we can’t stay. I wanted to. I imagined staying up for weeks, making fires, taking trips to town for groceries. Wearing jogging pants. There was more snow than I thought and it crunched with each step.  Tossed a few snowballs in the lake and watched them stay in little circles. The water is really, really, cold, small ponds alongside the road are freezing over. Picked up this blanket and mugs from the Target for TOMS collection. They were sold out of the poncho I wanted but I got Sean one of the chambray shirts. He has at least five that look similar but this one was nice. He’s totally one of those ‘Lumbersexuals’  everyone is talking about with a beard, who wears plaid and the Canadian tuxedo (denim on denim). Had to pour out our homemade beer and tried snow painting. No Picasso! Winter is a season I find inspiring.  I’m planning to lay low and hibernate the next few months. Working on something I hope to launch in April. In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer. Albert Camus For now, lights out at the cottage. The very last step of closing for the season. Until next time Muskoka, see you in the spring. <3 CASIE

Summer I Miss You, My Love.

I can’t stop thinking about summer. I need to get my a$$ to hot yoga or something. I’m not sure WHAT it is but I’ve been feeling so blarghhhh the last few days. Spent a few hours getting pampered on the weekend followed by a day of relaxation w/ my one true love then BAM I was sick on Monday. Gimme a break! Thinking Sean and I might hop over to Jamaica or somewhere hot next month. I’m dying to feel the sun on my face and salty ocean water on my skin. My few days off work last week were nice but I was still so connected to the Internet (and work) that it wasn’t really much of a break. You know what I mean? I feel like I need a ‘real vacation’ a digital detox. In other news, Valentines Day is coming up and we’ve not really got anything planned. I’d like to have a nice dinner and get a good sleep. I’m old now, lol. Last year I was surprised with a bracelet from Tiffany’s and he made me bacon hearts. It was perfect. I have a few giveaways for things for you coming up over the next few days. Urgh, just saw we are getting more snow tonight. ENOUGH ALREADY, ENOUGH! Looks like I’ll be hibernating all week AGAIN! Dreaming of Summer, Real Love

Urgh, I’m sick of winter. This is a face of a someone who is ready for a dose of SUNSHINE! Time to start planning vacation. A pile of birds flew out from under the bridge as this photo was taken. Thank goodness none of them ‘got me’. I know apparently ‘good luck’ but getting shat on by a bird en route to the office doesn’t not sounds like fun to me.   Skated again yesterday. Longing for days with bright sunshine and green grass. Bike rides too. I have real love for bike rides.   That’s all for now. Ok bye! May Long Weekend – Summer is here!

Had a great steak dinner last night then sat out on the dock. Finished the night having a beer in the hot tub by the moonlight. It was beautiful! En route to put the boat in the water. Went to garage sale. Found some movies and a long, black, Angora sweater. It was 75¢ but I have her $2 and they laughed their heads off. It was pretty funny. Have an awesome day. Wear sunscreen!  And bug spray. I got eaten alive by bedroom intruders last night! So many mozzies. CASIE

Payless Summer Preview Sale w/ Savings from CAA

I’ve been biking heaps since the weather has FINALLY warmed up. One of my fav things this time of year is shopping for new spring things! As I was browsing the CAA website  last week I was pleasantly surprised to see I can save 10% at Payless with my membership! I like shoes. Actually, I love shoes! Each summer I wear heaps of flat shoes and often wear them out from all my walking, biking, concerts, and activities. So, affordable little flats are perfect. Plus, a girl can never have too many shoes! I went to the Payless store located conveniently across from the Eaton Centre on Yonge Street. There are over 40 stores in the GTA and you can also order online. There’s heaps of shoes for men, women, and kids, with all kinds of accessories. You’ll save 10% if you show your CAA card when making a purchase.  Plus, their Summer Preview Sale is on now! I’m super impressed with all the life-side assistance savings from CAA. I’ve had my membership for about 3 months and already saved more having it than the cost of the membership. Remember my trip to Boston? Next on my list is a movie date and dinner where I use my CAA card to impress my BF with my savvy savings. Had lunch with Mum and Dad last week and they BOTH recently renewed their memberships. We’re a CAA family!  To see all the life-side assistance savings from CAA visit caasco.com or check them out on Facebook and Twitter. They have a blog too! Have an awesome day! <3 CASIE

SummerWorks 2012

I hope you took my advice and went to something at SummerWorks this year. As someone new to the theatre scene,  SummerWorks introduced me to a culture of awesome in the city. It was amazing to see so much talent from around the world brought together through art. I wish I could have seen every show and performance. Huge congrats to SummerWorks Theatre Festival Team! If you didn’t experience the festival, now you know for next year! My letters from the Letter Writing party should arrive this week! I loved the creativity in the live art sessions, Dare Night Lockdown, Letter Writing. Taking part in them infused a childlike fun that I feel people lose when they grow up. Don’t ever lose that. Festivals like this open your mind and heart to see things that inspire your life. You are not getting younger but you can always get awesomer. <3 CASIE

SummerWorks Performance Festival: Peachy Coochy at the Performance Bar

I subscribe to the Say Media blog and truly love the Venn diagrams that come every Friday morning. This one is from one of my favourite books “Steal Like An Artist”. Tomorrow night, 9:30pm at The Lower Ossington Theatre, a Peachy Coochy performance will grace the stage at the Performance Bar as part of the SummerWorks Theatre Festival. The name comes from the Japanese ‘Pecha Kucha‘ where each presenter has 5 minutes to deliver 15 slides with only 20 seconds for each slide. I know these as Ignite presentations, people do them at conferences sometimes. The cast will be sharing Venn diagrams in a form that is  ‘smart and playful, sweet and earnest, with a healthy dose of cheek’.  See the description on the SummerWorks site. I creeped YouTube for Peachy Coochy and there’s some funny ones. I’m looking forward to this! Performance Details: Date & Time: Thursday August 16, 9:30 pm – Location: Ticket: Pay-what-you-can Participants: Philip Akin: Artistic Director, Obsidian Theatre Company Tara Beagan: Artistic Director, Native Earth Performing Arts Ravi Jain: Artistic Director, Why Not Theatre Matthew Jocelyn: Artistic Director, Canadian Stage Laura Nanni: Festival Director, Rhubarb Festival Richard Rose: Artistic Director, Tarragon Theatre Cost is PWYC so if you are broke as a joke or rollin’ in dough you can still go and have some smart fun. I’ll be there and hope to see some familiar faces so we can laugh together.

Today’s Special: @Pinterest, @NastyGal, @SummerWorks, @DigitalJournal

These are some of my Pins from this week. Pinterest has become part of my daily routine. I love style so much and I’ve been pinning everything I want from Nasty Gal. I want everything. It’s torture. Their ads stalk me on many every single website and their email makes me drool. They’re hip on social and have a beauty of a blog with new lookbooks all the time.   Today Catherine posted an interview with Michael Rubenfeld, Artistic Producer of the SummerWorks theatre festival. Her and I chatted at the VIP Soiree last month and she included me in her article (see below). August 7, 2012: Digital Journal – Toronto blogger Casie Stewart (L) chats with journalist Catherine Kustanczy before the SummerWorks Soiree in early July. Stewart, who worked as the community manager for MuchMTV Group at Canadian broadcaster CTV and received mentions in the Wall Street Journal and Mashable (among others), is in charge of the festival’s blog this year. Read more. July 9 2012 – Casie Stewart (left) and Catherine Kustanczy at the SummerWorks Summer Soirée held at the Great Hall in Toronto. Photo by Della Rollins for the Globe and Mail The second photo was taken for the Globe & Mail but not published. (I don’t think??) My most recent post on the SummerWorks blog is about Hawksley Workman and one of his songs I love. He’s performing as part of the festival on Saturday. Off to Thompson Hotel roof for fashion soiree. Have a great day/night/morning wherever you are!
