Speaking | SociaLIGHT

Social what? There’s a new buzz word created every :02 seconds but ‘socialight’ is one I wasn’t really familia with. Socialite, yes. I’ve been a social person my whole life and I also like working hard and doing nice things for others. When I was introduced to the SociaLIGHT conference, I smiled knowing there’s gonna be lots of like minded people in a room together. I’m speaking on a panel this weekend at MTCC for the Socialight Conference. It’s a one day event for entrepreneurs & small business people from across Canada. Never heard of it? No problem! This vid will give you the low down in < :60 seconds. Did you know that “Last November, more than 100 countries celebrated Global Entrepreneurship Week and now 2011 has been recognized as the Year of the Entrepreneur in Canada.”  Learned that and some other smart facts from the Canadian Guv’s Biz dept. I’ve had an entrepreneurial fire burnin’ for years. In 1996 I won Young Entrepreneur of Cambridge for a publishing company I co-founded. Being on a panel at MTCC is totally checking something of a list for me. I’ve been going there & seeing speakers since I was a kid. Check out the other great speakers here. This past summer I hosted the Bench room during BHD Suites Gifting Lounge on MMVA weekend (here, here & here). The lovely peeps at Bench asked me if I have any upcoming events they could dress me for.  I mentioned the SociaLIGHT conference and today I had a shopping party for one at the Eaton Centre! Say hello to the Bench store babes who assisted me in picking a bunch of gear. Thanks girls! We were looking for two full outfits and I was leaning towards non-sporty or too branded. Thanks Bench Canada for a fun time and new digs. This is what I tried on: I…

I Want it Wednesday – Stolen Girlfriends Club

My fav NZ designers are jerks and send me a reminder that that sold out items from SS 2012 can now be pre-ordered. URGH YOU GUYS, I want everything!  Damn you, STOLEN GIRLFRIENDS CLUB. NZ fashion is ahead all kinds from Canada. I’ve been following NZ style my entire life (Thanks Mum & cousins!) and season after season, the things that hit their runways end up here 1-2 years later. Before the internet it used to be like 3-4 years. In 2004 I came back from Australia in skinny jeans, and a fedora with a mullet. Friends here thought I was crazy then years later, BAM, skinny jeans & fedoras on every hipster in Bellwoods. North America is so behind. No wonder kids at school always thought I had weird fashion sense. Hey kids, “I’m not weird”, you being the same as everyone else is “weird”. SGC just did a collabo with JC for the Stolen Girlfriends ‘Emma’ boot (above) featured in SS 2012. Kinda like the Lita but cowgirl-ishy. I have a new pair of JC’s from Solestruck in the mail for when I get back from my trip. Yay. Ditched all my old crapped out shoes at the end of summer, restocking has begun. Late night online shopping has officially become my guilty pleasure.

Mark’s Reintroduces Online Shopping

Over the past year I’ve become close with the Mark’s brand but I’ve been familiar with it my entire life. I remember going to the store in my home town  with Mum as kid. I’m pretty sure it’s still there. It’s awesome to see how this Canadian retailer has transformed from what I knew as only work clothes to all kinds of things I now mix into my fashioney wardrobe. Mark’s new e-commerce site launched on November 2. I’ve recently joined the online shopping craze and love it. There’s something about getting clothes in the mail that makes me oh so happy. This is exciting for them since their previous transactional e-commerce site was removed in April in order to create a better user experience, particularly in ensuring absolute accuracy in pricing, style numbers, etc. Mark’s has taken its previous site with an updated design and improved checkout experience. They also added a ratings and review section to get feedback. “This site is a testament to the great products we sell and a direct reflection of the quality and innovation that Mark’s has come to represent,” said Kristine Arcand, Online Business Manager for Mark’s. “Customers will find an easy online shopping experience with products that are delivered right to your door, free of delivery and handling charges within 10 business days… how smart is that?”  Tres smart. Last year for holiday I posted a bunch of my favourite things and one of them is the Denver Hayes super soft cardigan. I’ve lived in it for the last year. The Mark’s FW 2011 Lookbook features a few different version of my treasured favourite. Mum, you are probably gonna get one for Christmas, so, act surprised ok. In  celebration of the launch of their new e-commerce site, Mark’s is offering free shipping until the end of the year. How great is that?…

i think i’m ready to move on with someone new #mobile

Construction season. Looking forward to winter, as much as I don’t like being cold, I love staying inside where it’s warm and working on things. A blog makeover is coming. If you have any suggestions in design or functionality, LMK. (Mum, that’s “met me know”) This weekend I started testing out a new phone, HTC Status. I’ve had one HTC before but I’ve been hooked on Motorola Androids for the last year at least. This new HTC unit has a front facing camera (yay) but no flash (boo). It has a full keyboard and looks like a Blackberry but the touch screen is a bit small. The DEFY I had previous was sturdy and had a good camera but sometimes it would be slow & freeze when typing. Of all the Androids I’ve tried, the Motorola Milestone was my fav. We were such good friends. Things that are most imoprtant to me in a phone are good camera, flash, easy to type, Google sync contacts, email accounts, favourite apps (WordPress, Twitter etc). Nice to have are front facing camera, video editing and dual core processor. I could never go back to blackberry. Cue this song, nice mix. When she was great, I thought she was great. I was cutting up some broccoli for snack just now and sliced a sharp knife into my right hand middle finger by accident. It’s not that bad but there’s a bit of blood and I’m short one resource when typing. I’ve been thinking heaps about iPhone lately. I can’t stop thinking about it to be honest. I think I’m ready to move on with someone new and that someone is an iPhone. I’m having a hard time holdingback my feelings.  It’s so natural. ♥

Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.

Friday Kate & I attended the Women for Women’s luncheon in support of Women’s College Hospital. It was hosted by Jeanie Beker and there were over 800 women there. My sister was in Women’s College Hospital a couple years ago. WCH is a world leader in women’s health and they do research to improve women’s lives (some male patients too). Thank you kindly for the invte and I look forward to the next lunch Spring 2012. For info about the brand new Women’s College Hospital building and the great things they have going on go here. we take this halloween thing very seriously

Halloween is my fav time of year. Have I told you 1,000 times yet? Y’know the week before halloween right after after Zombie walk. It’s socially acceptable, I feel, to be in costume anytime this week. Not that being in costume any other day isn’t ok. Once I did a pub crawl as Wonder Woman. DRESSING UP IS AWESOME. Today CTS is having a store party with DJ EL DEVINE (Elliott), candy, pumpkin carving and everyone dressed up. There’s a 50% coupon hid somewhere in the store too.  I don’t wok here but I AM the Mayor and have been for some time now. Sammy carved this pumpkin himself. He’s a halloween virgin and last night was his first outing. Elliott is also Australian, double Halloween VIRGINS! It’s a damn shame they don’t celebrate halloween down under. One reason I’m extremely glad my sister and I  grew up in Canada and not NZ. You can find Elliott at the Hoxton or somewhere Queen West drinking PBR.   Lucas is ALSO Australian!     Emma isn’t really preggers. When someone say here smoking there were DISGUSTED! haha If you are around come by will here here chilling for a while! Elliot is playing god tunes all afternoon 🙂

Get out there and build it.

Something I really love about life is the uncertainty of not knowing what the day will bring you. Opportunity, challenges, happiness, stress, whatever it is, I accept. Woke up today feeling kinda meh. Waited ages for a driver from CO-OP, they should be called slow-op. Was angry for a few minutes seconds but had a lovely chat with concierge while waiting. Arrived at 1 King West during morning session break at Dell CAP. I didn’t realize how big the thing was before I went. I was taken to my seat (which I then realized) was two seats down from the moderator (Mark Evans), beside a Dell exec. and in clear view of the livestream. I don’t know WHAT I was expecting but it wasn’t this. I was pleasantly surprised. I’m not a Dell user, nor do I have any Dell products and before today I knew very little about the brand or company. I was impressed by the attention to detail, organization, and care the people at Dell have to their business. There were not more than 30 people, some local, others flown in from across Canada & the US. We shared ideas about brands we thought were doing things well in customer service, purchasing, sustainability and social media. My favourite part was the Social Media Discussion which included all Dell Panelists. The livestream is available to watch in sections here. This is the segment lead by Mark Graham (Rightsleeve) & myself on SM: View the story “Tweets from Dell CAP Day – October 2011” on Storify]   Everyone met in the Vault for cocktail hour and I walked to Ryerson University were I was speaking to the Image Arts Union & other students about personal branding & social media. We had a good discussion going for a while and in the middle of my talk the lights went…

You look just as beautiful as the day we met.

We had a breakup last summer but we got back together fairly quick. It’s nice getting messages like this to celebrate anniversaries. It’s the little things that count. My relationships with technology (hardward & software) are some of my most cherished ones – Andy (iPad), James Dean (Macbook Air), Robert (my old PC), Olympus cameras, Zoey (sewing machine) and the most recent addition, XBOX360 (he is yet to be named). Made this shirt for Foursquare Day in 2010. I was working with MuchMTV at the time but they didn’t really get that I was wearing THE badge on my shirt. Ha! This pic showed up in the deck for Puma International’s “After Hours Athlete” campaign before they hired me. Check out some of my Things to Do in Toronto (Generated by Foursquare Checkins): Must Hit Sandwich Places Must Visit Parks Must Visit Music Venues Clothing Stores (add CTS on there!) Must Visit Bars Food & Drink places to Visit Went crazy on Joe Fresh nail polish the other day. Three for $10 and they go on thin so dry pretty fast which I like. Was given a few at the TIFF Tastemakers Lounge in 2010 and have been hooked since. Playlist today is Bon Iver on Soundcloud. Sam woke me up early but made brekky to make up for it. Feeling grumpy and the weather doesn’t help. Slow sad music is quite soothing. Hope your day is good so far 🙂

Music: TinyDanza Come In First Place At Indie Week!

I first met Galen from Tiny Danza in 2009 at Steamwhistle. My hair was long & a very different blonde back then. Nice beard Galen. Brock’s been working with them for a while now and last weekend they WON Indie Week. So proud of all the boys. They’re had some serious hustle the last couple years and for that, mad respect. Also much respect ‘cuz we both rock shirts with our own brands on ’em. HUSTLE! October 17th, 2011 // Toronto, ON –  Following a thunderous show at Tattoo Rock Parlour Sunday night in Toronto, Tiny Danza have won the opportunity to showcase in Ireland for Indie Week 2012. Tiny Danza was chosen as the top band of the festival by a panel of industry judges out of more than 200 talented acts at Indie Week 2011 and have solidified themselves as the band to watch in the coming months. This is one of my fav’s. Enjoy! 🙂

Social Change Through the Social Web: The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind

Today I’m biking over to Yonge Dundas Square (where I won a car last week!) to launch koodonation.com, an online hub that connects volunteers with non-profits through micro-volunteering. There’s gonna be a fun ‘Wipeout’ style game for uni kids and I’m a judge with Jeremy Taggart of Our Lady Peace and Daniel Johnson from Stereos. The whole fun event is hosted by Sheena from MTV Live. We’re volunteering our time and Koodonation.com is making a $20,000 contribution to a charity of our choice. My charity is the Moving Windmills Project which supports Malawian-run rural economic development and education projects in Malawi. Mum introduced me to William’s story and I wanted to get involved. Here’s his TED Talk so you can be inspired too. For more info on micro-volunteering in Canada see Koodonation on Newswire here or check out the site at koodonation.com. If you’re around today come to YD Square & say HELLOOOOOO!
