Toronto Fashion Week: LABEL S/S 2012

The LABEL spring/summer 2012 showing happened in the studio, and was definitely a breath of fresh air and the perfect collection for spring. The palette was very neutral, with whites, grays, lavenders, pinks, hints of teal, and some black. Every single piece that walked down the small runway I would wear in a heartbeat, and a similar consensus formed with the people around me: any girl could wear these clothes and be effortlessly chic! All the designs and cuts were beautiful, and could be easily dressed up or down with the right accessories. The models showed off cute organic statement necklaces; geometric wooden blocks, wooden cuffs. The whole show was very natural and fresh. Tree branches marked the runway and models stood on rock pedestals after their walk. At some point through the show I was just envisioning myself strolling alongside a river bank, wearing all the pieces! The movement and lightness of the whole collection was just so spot on, kudos to Shawna Robinson and Natalie Sydoruk! My favourites include the V-back LBD (the sheer and fringe were a wonderful surprise), the two-toned bodysuit-lavender maxi ensemble, and the pink drawstring dress with cut-out shoulders. x Carrie

Speaking | SociaLIGHT

Social what? There’s a new buzz word created every :02 seconds but ‘socialight’ is one I wasn’t really familia with. Socialite, yes. I’ve been a social person my whole life and I also like working hard and doing nice things for others. When I was introduced to the SociaLIGHT conference, I smiled knowing there’s gonna be lots of like minded people in a room together. I’m speaking on a panel this weekend at MTCC for the Socialight Conference. It’s a one day event for entrepreneurs & small business people from across Canada. Never heard of it? No problem! This vid will give you the low down in < :60 seconds. Did you know that “Last November, more than 100 countries celebrated Global Entrepreneurship Week and now 2011 has been recognized as the Year of the Entrepreneur in Canada.” Learned that and some other smart facts from the Canadian Guv’s Biz dept. I’ve had an entrepreneurial fire burnin’ for years. In 1996 I won Young Entrepreneur of Cambridge for a publishing company I co-founded. Being on a panel at MTCC is totally checking something of a list for me. I’ve been going there & seeing speakers since I was a kid. Check out the other great speakers here. This past summer I hosted the Bench room during BHD Suites Gifting Lounge on MMVA weekend (here, here & here). The lovely peeps at Bench asked me if I have any upcoming events they could dress me for. I mentioned the SociaLIGHT conference and today I had a shopping party for one at the Eaton Centre! Toronto Fashion Week: Baby Steinberg S/S 2012

Baby Steinberg‘s spring/summer 2012 collection, titled Remnants, was a beautiful and very colourful collection all made from upcycled materials. Her inspiration came from when she taught “handicraft to children in the Brazilian slums known as the Favelas” (from the cute little show packages left on the bleachers– which also included a lollipop and membership info to the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art). I particularly enjoyed the feather details on a lot of the pieces. It added a lovely exotic feeling, and really made it both art and clothing. The red ribbon through the braids were also really cute! The crop top and zipper skirt was one of my favourite combos to go down the runway. The little peek-a-boo snakeskin lining (perhaps reversible skirt?!) was a nice touch. Seriously, the details were impeccable. And it’s always fun to see how designers handle using recycled (or in this case, upcycled) materials because there are just so many ways to go about it (and do it wrong). I think Baby Steinberg did a lovely job, putting on a bright show that really captured the beauty of turning something old into something new. x Carrie

Friday I’m in Love

First post using WordPress app on iPhone. I love this thing so much. It’s true once you go Mac you never go back! Had a beautiful day at home yesterday. In he evening went to Swarovski Spring Summer 2012 preview with Keri and a bunch of other Toronto fashion bloggers. I have a very special gif in the making as a thank you for the lovely gift they gave me. Ditched going to any other events to watch movies with Sammy. I’ve been in vacation mood for a few days and it feels so good. Off to get a mani, pedi, tan and pack before 3pm. Boston Bob is in town and meeting my sister and I for dinner. I Want it Wednesday – Stolen Girlfriends Club

My fav NZ designers are jerks and send me a reminder that that sold out items from SS 2012 can now be pre-ordered. URGH YOU GUYS, I want everything! Damn you, STOLEN GIRLFRIENDS CLUB. NZ fashion is ahead all kinds from Canada. I’ve been following NZ style my entire life (Thanks Mum & cousins!) and season after season, the things that hit their runways end up here 1-2 years later. Before the internet it used to be like 3-4 years. In 2004 I came back from Australia in skinny jeans, and a fedora with a mullet. Friends here thought I was crazy then years later, BAM, skinny jeans & fedoras on every hipster in Bellwoods. North America is so behind. No wonder kids at school always thought I had weird fashion sense. Hey kids, “I’m not weird”, you being the same as everyone else is “weird”. SGC just did a collabo with JC for the Stolen Girlfriends ‘Emma’ boot (above) featured in SS 2012. Kinda like the Lita but cowgirl-ishy. I have a new pair of JC’s from Solestruck in the mail for when I get back from my trip. Yay. Ditched all my old crapped out shoes at the end of summer, restocking has begun. Late night online shopping has officially become my guilty pleasure.

a slice of paradise in your own backyard

Had a lovely afternoon in the sun today. Picked up a new paid of Doc’s at the Dr. Martens Store (I’m the Mayor!). I gad a gift certificate from the team to get a any pair I saw at the Fall preview back in July. I got black polished laredo Serena’s, last size 6 they had. Lucky me! Stopped by Quicksilver and got a pair of board shorts & a matching top for my surf trip to Costa Rica next week. So excited to surf. Visited the lovely ladies at Get Outside for a new pair of plain black Havaianas (trashed my old ones at the end of summer). Got may nails done on my way home. I love the hand massage you get. I wonder if I could just go in for hand massage? Is that weird? I’d say it was because I spend all day on the computer. Read my book in the balcony sun for a bit and am about to clean my room. Lauren is coming by before the My City Lives “That Night in Toronto” party and I’d like if my room didn’t look like hoarders. Hope you’re having an awesome day. Get some sun on your face! I was looking through old photos and came across this one. I shot it when I first got my PEN from Olympus earlier this year. I love the change in seasons we have but man I’m missing summer already. Next week I got to Costa Rica from the 11th-20th for surfing & yoga. Been ages since I surfed (Australia 2004) so I might start with a lesson so I don’t end up hurting myself! (God that would really suck) Learned yesterday that the Costa Rica Film Festival is happening while I’m there and at not far from my restort. Just my luck, I go or a relaxing vacation & there’s a film festival! Toronto Fashion Week: Sid Neigum S/S 2012

Now that the spring/summer 2012 shows are all finito, let’s take some time to sit back, relax, and reflect on the whirlwind of shows this season! One of the first ones I got to attend this season was Sid Neigum, a Canadian-born, NY-based designer, and it was love at first sight. I was especially a fan of his F/W collection, and was excited to see what he’d come up with for the lighter season! The opening of the show was great: dark and moody, all the models coming out and standing presentation-style for a moment. Props to Sid (or whoever) for opening and closing the show with beaut androgynous models (John Cherkas, Andrej Pejic)– it definitely worked with the styling. Lots of black for spring, which is a good-different, and mixed in are some teal (including an amazing bright teal/turquoise leather jacket with cutout shoulders! love!), copper, and tan. Great structured pieces, nicely contrasted by the more relaxed, colourful prints. My favourite: the dramatic-slash-hysterical leather eyebrows and intense ballerina buns, accessorized with long leather ties/whips by The Fashion Collective‘s Dwayne Kennedy, from his new accessories line Leatherheads. We saw some wooden flatform-esque type shoes that made the models walk like angry and uncomfortable, but beautiful, people. One male model rocked wedges all the way through! Overall, the collection had a very eastern feel (which might give into the collections name, “East Meets East”) and was very well done. Definitely a memorable show and many pieces are going on my spring/summer wishlist! x Carrie

You look just as beautiful as the day we met.

We had a breakup last summer but we got back together fairly quick. It’s nice getting messages like this to celebrate anniversaries. It’s the little things that count. My relationships with technology (hardward & software) are some of my most cherished ones – Andy (iPad), James Dean (Macbook Air), Robert (my old PC), Olympus cameras, Zoey (sewing machine) and the most recent addition, XBOX360 (he is yet to be named). Made this shirt for Foursquare Day in 2010. I was working with MuchMTV at the time but they didn’t really get that I was wearing THE badge on my shirt. Ha! This pic showed up in the deck for Puma International’s “After Hours Athlete” campaign before they hired me. Autumn Splendor in Tranquil Muskoka

Had an awesome couple days out of the city. After a big 10 day non-stop go-go-go festival, I needed a break. Last year I shipped off to New Zealand for NZ Fashion Week a few days after TIFF and I came back soooo tired. I vowed to give myself a break this year. Purchased the “Autumn Splendor in Tranquil Muskoka” from Jaunt.ca for $99. We stayed at the Bayview Wildwood Resort, Severn Bridge, ON. Food & accommodations were lovely, I enjoyed the view, lake and silence the most. Over the summer I did a Toronto Grafitti Tour and stayed at the SoHo Metropolitan with Jaunt so I knew it would be a good buy. Sammy was all dressed up for the gallery that night and we had limo service. I REALLY wanted to canoe and we could use whatever we wanted form the equipment shed which was nice. Rode bikes when we first arrived then took a canoe for a spin. Canoed to brekky… … and back from the main house to the cottage. I feel relaxed and ready to take on the million things coming up in my calendar from now till the New Year. 2012 FTW! (I kid, I kid) Going away me realize I need to get out of the city more. Thank you Ford Canada for the use of a Fiesta from the media fleet. I loved driving the little thing. Mum also loved it. I drove more than 10 hours including the visit to Mum and going up North. It was great on gas too. Hope your week is off to a relaxing start. Have an awesome day!

Woke up feeling pretty inspired today. The chill in the air reminds me winter is around the corner but instead of being down, I though about all the time I’ll spend inside working on new ideas and projects. Winter is hibernation time. Lots of planning new ideas & projects for Spring/Summer.The Einstein photos is from the Incubus show I went to recently, Brandon on drum in the front. Been trying to decide which Docs to get with a gift certificate I have and after seeing this girl, I think I’ve decided. Docs shoes for the win. Will be able to wear them all year and they look cute with socks/tights. Having a BBQ at Mum’s for dinner tonight. Super excited to see her. Sent her flowers yeaterday and the sound in her voice when she thanked me for them was absolutely priceless. When she was away for a year, there were so many times she didn’t have Skype so we weren’t able to chat. The fact that I can ring her at work now is something I cherish very much. Planning to escape north of the city on Sunday for a cottagey getaway. This week I learned something pretty cool. Did you know that filling out those annoying captchas actually is helping to digitize old books and newspapers. Check out this video when you have a few minutes. I love the internet. Toronto International Film Fest: Tastemakers Lounge

When celebrities come to town for TIFF they get invited to lounges to see & receive new & exciting products. Media get invites too. It’s a way for companies to get their products in the hands of stars and journalists. The Tastemakers Lounge is hosted by RockIt and they do an excellent job of bringing together brands & people. I took my PA Kate for the experience it and too take photos. New glasses from FYSH. Thanks Team! I picked out new glasses from FYSH NATION last year too. This is me rockin’ them w/ Morgan Ross at Strombo’s TIFF party. Next it was time to pick out bracelets and charms from PANDORA. Kate took home a few goodies too. Kate chose macrame black leather and I picked sterling silver. See all the styles here. I chose a wee little birdy. Twitter <3 Planning to have some serious game nights this winter cause Mattel has hooked me up with rad games. I picked up and ANGRY BIRDS sling shot! REAL ANGRY BIRDS! I played it at their Mattel Game Night over the summer. It’s fun. Was given this gorgeous silk eyemask from Cilque and OH MY GOD I slept with it last night. My eyes were in the clouds and I had an amazing sleep. I’m dying for a set of Cilque sheets and robe to match. Made friends with team Sharpie. I carry Sharpie’s with me all the time and had one in my purse to proove it. Then Kate and I raided the drawers. Got limited edition 80’s glam colours too! Told the team how I always start out with Sharpie for tattoo ideas. I drew this bracelet tatt on my left arm on with two different green Sharpie’s for about three years before I got it. these are a few of my favourite things (right now)

This post if full of things that add glitter to my life. Thought I’d share with ya. Bangs from Doll Bar, Olympus PEN, vintage hats. I’ve been trying a new routine of going to bed earlier and waking up earlier. Once you get outta bed, you can really accomplish heaps before the day really started. That’s my September goal: do more before 10am than most people do in a whole day. My October goal is: go to England or New Zealand. Settin’ em high. YES WE CAN. Sprocket Rocket camera from Lomography. I’ve got heaps of film because, frankly, I’m not that good at using the camera so I need to take heaps of shots before I can be considered good. Analogue is haaaarrrrrrd. New duvet cover is the alphabet, say hello to my ALPHA bed. See what I did there? Oh yeah, creative play on words. New flowery pillow looks painted and that eye mask is from Keri. I sleep with an eye mask pretty much every night. I live in a glass box, it’s SO SUPER sunny in the AM! Although, getting to sleep is never a problem thanks to my new memory foam mattress. According to bestmattress-reviews, there are a number of quality options at a lower price than you’d think. Gadget love: iPad (Andy), Macbook Air (James Dean), Android (Motorola DEFY), Logitech wireless mouse. I spend most the day with these guys. Ok, here’s something really amazing….you won’t BELIVE how tall I am with these legendary things strapped on. Aren’t they beautiful? They’re Jeffrey Campbell and I ordered them online at Solestruck. Last week I went into Grindhouse Burger Bar to test out their burgers. They’re in a city wide burger challenge so my friend/owner Rob invited me in to taste the goodness. I was starving at the time so it worked out awesome. No Coke or Pepsi products, Cane Cola has been around for over 100 years and uses real cane sugar. Was impressed to learn that all their menu items are made in-house. This includes ketchup & all the sauces! They have a bunch of fancy burgers but I went for their gourmet big mac style. You know I love my maccas. These onion rings were SO good. 🙂 Grindhouse is one of 4 Toronto Burger joints downtown who are up for to win ‘Best Burger‘ during the Hot & Spicy Food Festival. your life is your movie.

Writing my movie one day at a time. I loved shooting this commercial yesterday. No telling what it is for but it will be funny and might be up early as next weekend. You will know when it is. This big camera and crew were shooting ME! I love it. More please. Auditioning for a show tonight. Fingaz crossed! What kinda face is that Miss? My role was “hipster girl” and wardrobe said she liked what I was wearing and I should wear my own clothes. I’ve been method acting for this role for years. Acting is fun. Did my first commercial when I was 16. It was for an electric toothbrush and it aired in the States. Man I would LOVE to find it. I had braces and I made like $500. Do you know where this is? This street near Danforth & Broadview has so many beautiful houses. I rode this baby ALL over town yesterday. Front/Spadina to Queen/Logan, back home, then Queen/Spadina to Danforth/Broadview and home again. I went to the Drake after and took a taxi, enough biking for one day. I don’t work out (often) so I really love biking. I’ll workout more in the winter when it’s cold outside. (Doesn’t everyone say that?) Sheryl this bike has made me enjoy summer so much. Thank you for giving it to me! My new watch is sexy, I love it. Pretty view of the city from over here. I didn’t hang out in this park much when I lived in the area. Cool. Not cool. Worked with a bunch of nice people yesterday.

eight hours of sleep really energizes you!

I only have a minute but if I don’t blog before I start my day, thoughts on blogging linger like a screen over everything I do. I’m rushing to location to shoot that commercial. My role is ‘hipster girl’, I know, I was made for this. After that back home writing for fun client/cool project. Tonight there are so many things happening, I have a fall preview of brands I really like so hopefully that means new clothes! BBQ at School and summer hangout at the Drake for SAY Media my advertising company. Loving the grass on our balcony. If you are interested in getting a quote, as me. Welcome to the party. Please drink responsibly. The lights were my love of the night. More of this please. So pretty. These shots are so tumblrey or hipster bride. If you are reading this and getting married (I know there’s a few!) and don’t know Hipster Bride yet, well, be thankful you are reading this now. It’s full of inspiration. This one is cool. Beautiful clear sky & bright moon tonight. I love this city. Reminded me a bit of the supermoon, that night was special. Bit of a stalk party, cameras everywhere. I bet they make a wicked video from the night. Saw a couple videographers capturing moments in time. Look at that sky & view, so nice. Loved people walking by wondering what the heck this ‘pop up party’ was. Lights and music were in everyones eyes & ears. You couldn’t miss it. There was a lineup the entire night. You‘re alright but I’m here, darling, to enjoy the party. Now THIS is cool. Never seen one of these before… Say, wha? What’s a beer pumper? Oh yes, this is a beer pumper my friends.
