Tech | My DNA: 23andMe Launches in Canada

This week I went to the Canadian launch of 23andMe. The privately held company is located in Mountain View, California and they specialize in genomics and biotechnology. I love this stuff. I don’t know heaps about it but I want to learn so I was reading the blog made by Dan Miller that’s all about these types of kits! Using a saliva-based DNA sample, they provide genetic reports on ancestry, family history and connect you with your DNA relatives. They have over 650,000 paying genotyped customers and 20K are Canadian. CEO + cofounder Anna gave us some insight on how 23and me works. Informative article on FactCompany here -> Inside 23andMe founder Anne Wojcicki’s $99 DNA Revolution. I saw Anne on CTV this morning in Montreal. All Canada’s top media was there for the Canadian launch. CBC in my face right here! One of the neat things knowing about your genetic makeup is disease prevention. For example, people who have the BRCA gene are more likely to get certain types of Cancer. Angelina Jolie had a double mastectomy after testing positive for a likely lethal BRCA1 mutation. After learning about the company we were given a 23andme kit with expedited shipping so we could learn about our own genetic makeup. Mine was in the mail by the end of the day! You have to spit into this small container and put on the lid to mix in a chemical liquid with your sample. Once complete it goes into a bio bag and back in the box for shipping. I registered my sample and now I wait. It should take about three weeks to get an email that my results are in. When I get a notification, I’ll be able to login and see reports, ethnicity, ancestry, DNA relatives and more.…

Millennials: Getting the right mix of financial advice

I never thought I’d be in an article about having good finances, let alone millennials and good financial advice.. It seemed impossible back when I graduated from collegge and uni, faced with debt from school, and every major credit card. I moved back from Australia and was BROKE. I had mounting debt and wasn’t making nearly enough money. I was on this show called Maxed Out (now on the Oprah Network!) where I confronted my debt with a financial advisor and through that experience, got a better paying job. If you don’t think you’ll get a spot on a show so you’re able to tackle your financial issues head-on, instead just get in touch with a service like Traverse City wealth management firm so you’re able to fix your finances. The host thought me making a living by being ‘Casie Stewart’ was a total joke and nearly impossible since I didn’t come from money. She compared me to Paris Hilton and I officially launched my casiestewart.com website at the end of the show. I had been writing THIS IS MY LIFE at blogspot but finally went to my own url. This week, an article that I consulted on recently came out with a study from TD bank. It quotes me and was published on PR Newswire, Yahoo Finance and some other places. This is my real story and my actual serious advice is if you are having money worries, no matter how broke you are, it is helpful to see someone who can get you on the right track. I’m 31 and debt free now! When looking into loans and finance advisers, you’ll need to do your research and learn to understand the alternative lenders and options you have. I have also learned a lot about managing money and utility…

Canon Blogtography: Holiday Portrait Session

I  LOVE the holidays! Nothing like meeting up with friends, letting your hair down with colleagues, boxing day deals, and making memories. In our most recent Canon Blogtography Session at Herman & Audrey, I was pleasantly surprised to see Christmas decorations, a tree, and lights.  It may have only been November but there was no stopping me from putting  on the Christmas music! You can bet I started with Mariah! In this session we learned how to take portraits. It was my most favourite session all the ones we’ve had so far. We went over a variety of ways to shoot perfect holiday portraits and what lenses to use. We worked on depth, putting things in focus, and shooting under low light. ex. candle light. I’ve been taking my own portrait since 2004 when I started this blogging so it was really wonderful to learn how to actually do it right. Our session was lead by top Canadian portrait photographer Steve Carty.  He’s taken a few of my portraits before, see here and here for video. Tips on Taking Portraits from Canon Canada My Portraits from Our Session We were encouraged to snap shots of each other. These are a few of my favourite shots from the session. I’ll share some they took of me before Christmas comes! Andrew Dobson  Corinne McDermott Steve Carty Nelia Belkova It definitely helps to have a tripod when you are shooting group shots like this around the table for example. You can pick up a tripod from any camera store. I love to use a tripod and the self-timer for taking self-portraits and making sure I’m included in group shots.  Aren’t they cute? 🙂 For more tips and tricks on taking great photos visit canonoutsideofauto.ca and check out Steve Carty’s portraits for creative inspiration. Happy Holidays…

i totally had a dude where’s my car moment

No seriously. I’m not used to driving a car downtown. I love to walk and text and take photos and look at stuff. Yes, driving is fun but YES driving downtown in the middle of the day can make you a crazy person. A CRAZY PERSON. I feel like a tourist driving. Yesterday Toyota Canada gave me a Matrix to drive for the week. I’m not sure why I think this, but I have a feeling that they got it to me by using a car moving company similar to CarsRelo as it was the easiest way to do it. However they delivered it to me though, I was so excited to try it out. It’s a fun car. The ability to just get up and go is awesome. For example, today I had brunch at my Sister’s house:) Back to the story… Today my car was towed. I got it yesterday. “There’s a first for everything! #casiefail (@ JP Towing) http://4sq.com/i1vsxd“ Stop laughing. I thought I was fine where I parked but I was wrong. I left the office and was chatting away on the phone as I walked back to the car on King Street just after 5:15pm. I parked at 2:45. You can’t park there 4-6pm. My friend on the phone witnessed a mini panic. Where’s my car? OMG. All the cars were gone. It took me less than 15min to find it at JP nyc towing company and in about an hour I had it back. Thank you Shelly for driving me. The towing people were really nice and despite that it cost $180, it was kinda fun. I originally thought they’d put the cars on tandem trailers to transport them to the towing company but I later realised it wouldn’t have fit on one! I’m…

love is in the air

Mmm, chocolate cake. Happy Birthday Joelle! This one if from Joelle’s camera. And this one captures a very serious conversation…total ‘OMG’ face on me. Back to my camera for some more real talk. Uh, pardon me? Omg. Hmmm, someone taking photo with shaky hand. Bad romance. Vodka/water/strawberry, good for sipping. Light, refreshing, hydrating and will keep you from hangover given you don’t go crazy. Joelle had this gorgeous dress with a fringe on the arms, look closely. Totally in love with fringe. Fringe everything. Hearts on everything too. I have two different heart tattoo’s in case you were wondering. Both on right arm, one pink, one red. Nice surprise to see you there Simon. Goo work on the tunage and fun times. Your date was a babe. borderline the girl artistic borderline artistic borderline is borderline artistic feeling borderline artistic borderline artistic borderline her borderline borderline artistic heart artistic artistic borderline on artistic borderline artistic borderline artistic fire. All these snowflakes are full of love & light. Mum collected all these heart photos on her sailing trip to the Bahamas. She sounds so happy when I talk to her. Imagine living there on a boat right now. Bliss. When I see a heart shape in something I always think it’s a sign she’s watching out for me. For example, this sweet potato tempura heart. Yum one, Mum! The more love you give the more love you have. If you need some it’s right here for you. Ok byeeeeeeee. Valetines night get ready time. xo

just call me the RE-ENERGIZER bunny

This workout thing is starting to change my life. Who knew I would ever be saying this? It must be a new year or something. Just LOOK at that happy face. In my most recent trip to The Motion Room I did the Re-Energizer Bootcamp. I’ve never been a gym-rat. I prefer Gym Bunny anyways. [insert cute smiley face] Boot camp sessions at TMR are at 6AM (Before Work) LunchTime (12noon) Afternoons (4pm) Late evenings 8pm or pre-arranged scheduling. It’s fun, you get shown what to do like this: Then we do it: HUZZAHHHH!!!!!!! Boot camp is done in a group & the Starter Packages are with personal assessment/direct one-to-one training. After the first two sessions of Boot Camp—you move into a Starter Package. This seriously turned my arms into burning man the next day but whatever. It’s good. I am strong! REALLY HERCULES-HULK HOGAN-ONE-ARM-PUSHUP-STRONG. Beat that. This is incredibly hard. You have to move your feet back and forth in the stirrup thinger while in a plank. OMG get ready for my abs to bust right out. This ball has sand in it and is surprisingly heavy. Why am I always smiling? This is supposed to be hard work. Crazy girl. There’s a bunch of stations we rotate through in 30 sec, 45 sec, 60 sec intervals. By the end you are hitting the floor but you feel awesome. AWESOME! The sell different sessions in 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, 24 weeks. at 2 or 3 x per week. As a scheduled gym, you set/select your timeslots upon purchase. Boot camps also includes an intro session to the starter package and nutrition sessions with their holistic nutritionist. Hookin’ you RIGHT up to get your body in shape baby. I whip my hair back and forth. Yeah I do.…

he called me brainy hot and he said that was the best hot in the world. thank you for that.

I used to do these Friday posts that were called TGIF: Twitter, Google, Internet, Facebook. A roundup of some of my fav things from around the week this week. Guess what? I’m bringing it b-b-b-back. Here we go. Please comment, it’s nice when you share, I share, we share. Twitter: Influence. It’s a word that gets tossed around on the internet when talking about brands and people and ROI and social media but what does that really mean? The big draw I feel used to be traffic, if you had traffic, you had influence. Thanks to Twitter and a couple other sites, traffic on your blog is not the only way to measure. There’s more that come into play, attitude, reputation, audience. Brands want to connect with people that represent the same things they stand for, people who identify with the brand make it more authentic. (A word now totally over used BTW.) For example, Virgin America is a great brand match for me, I’m a cheeky little rabble-rouser, I like to have fun and I reckon Sir RB and I will make good friends. (P.S. we meet in Dallas Dec. 1st). Klout was recently featured in the Globe & Mail and I think what they are doing is great. Here’s a snippit: “In the fast-changing social media world, influence is becoming increasingly important as companies start to focus more on who is leading conversations as opposed to how many conversations are happening. In many respects, there is more emphasis on quantity rather than quality. “ Google: Check out my commercial from the Smirnoff Canada Graphic party in July 19th at Andrew Richard Designs in Toronto. Been chatting NYC agency and girl’ be getting paid.  I’ve done a bunch of tv/movie stuff in the past and I think I’m ready…

i feel like i get it, y’know, the internet stuff

I was feeling a little frazzeled. My phone froze in the night (not from the cold) which resulted in me waking up sans alarm and late for my little ‘wake up early, get shit done‘ plan. Alas… my attitude remains positive and I feel like I get it. Today I’m sharing skills, helping our newest intern learn about link building and little tips & tricks around Facebook & Twitter. Speaking of link building, if this is something you’re not too familiar with, but are looking for ways to implement SEO amongst your business, then getting in touch with professionals like Outreach Pete could make this part of a lot easier. It’d be on less thing to think about while you focus on other aspects. Digital marketing is a lot more expansive than I first realised. I’m going to suggest that we use something like these Digital Tepee SEO Services to help see where we’re at with our SEO and digital marketing efforts. Many people who run websites and businesses are likely to have use for something like Search Engine Optimisation Packages at some stage. I’ve waited worked a long time to have a job like this, and it feels great to be able to make suggestions like that. So many things happen in a day that I don’t remind myself of tell you about. For example, right now I’m eating a sub and Doritos with root beer. Last night I watched Jeopardy and had dinner at Terroni. I kissed the famous athlete before he shipped off England. I also had a mild panic attack about all the work I wanna get done . I realized I need to prioritize EVERYTHING. Finally, I went to bed later than I wanted to cause I got lost in Twitter and Tumblr. I saw this…

balance sheet: january 27 2010 9:59pm

Sometimes I feel like it really knows me. We spend by far the most time together, late nights, all day at work,  mobile, me and the internet. I’ve been suprised recently by suggestions Facebook makes, or genius in itunes,  random captchas,  the little things. For example, today FB suggested I use mobile cause I don’t yet and in little text below said “this person & “thins person” are using it, I smiled. They were both boys I dated, how did you know that FB, I never really told you. You little creeper. FB was like, casually suggesting I should creep on over to their profile and see what they’ve been up to lately. I chuckled a little.  Oh internet… I find I remember stuff more now than ever. I like to take screen shots of trending topics on Twitter. It’s a snapshot of millions of conversations worldwide.  I also like to write things down when I think of them. Smartphone is good for that, emailing yourself notes.

what do you do on a palendrome day

start it the same way you end it? 01022010 –Numbers ‘count’ as palendromes and today is one.  This is a really long one and good for the day: Are we not drawn onward, we few, drawn onward to new era [more]. I have fun on the internet…for example:  I just clicked a link from a guy on twitter and it took me to a tumblr when I clicked on it and found this site: My Life Is Average. At first I thought, average, like ordinary..who wants to be ordinary? But that’s not it, it’s little things not so bad like simple pleasures and some are funny. Like this: “On Thanksgiving, my grandma asked my cousin and me what “wtf” means. Not wanting to destroy her innocence, we told her it means “where’s the fudge.” She then spent the rest of the night saying “wtf” to everyone in the family. MILA” Legendary fun for the whole family I reckon. I can see Jenie and I and the cuzzies.  My cousin Matt (with the camera) came to visit me in Australia and party this one time (fb pic). It was epic.

it was so weird at the time, i couldn’t stop myself

i’m not sure what happened but it did. i light went on. it was a few things that lead me there. creative people around me, compliments on creative work, being surrounded by smart, successful, creative business people. thinking about ‘it’s not how good you are it’s hot good you wanna be’, one of my favorite books. i feel like i can’t really go back now. they say if you do what you love you will have success, i love doing this. i love writing and taking photos and laughing at myself and remembering thing things i forget. it makes me happy to do social good; social good in funness, good causes, good people. i stayed up all night. learning about things. reading blogs, commenting. drawing in sketchbook.when i have an idea i write it down. i’ve found some neat stuff lately and most i’ve posted on my tubmlr blog. it’s all the things i find around the internet that i don’t put here but like to share. i read a great article called ‘the 7 vices of highly creative people, posted on salon.com, Feb. 9, 200o. i know i have my vices and bad habits, but i have good ones too. read it here. “If you go through life free of bad habits, you won’t live forever, but it will feel like it. ”

xylophones and zebras

i don’t always have coffee but sometimes i do. i make patterns in some things and avoid them in others. i like to avoid doing things in sequence that seem predictable. like smoking for example. i rarely smoke at work or during the day. not that it makes it any better. i love croissants. plain. butter. i don’t mind so much when it rains. it’s like winter, you have to dress for it.  wellies are obvious.  sabrina said ‘you have so many’ rain jackets. that’s because when it rains i get sad sometimes and when i have a nice jacket to wear i shift my perception that day and go ‘yes! i get to wear my rain coat’. it’s about perception. thunder roar and lightning bolt. when i was studying kabbalah i learned about shifting how i traditionally look at things and seeing them from different angles. when you step outside your comfort level or normal behavior and look at things differently, you create open space for positivity in your life.  you just gotta stay focused.  you just gotta stay focused. this is what my cup said today, so true. the way i see it #297 When I was young I was mislead by flash cards into believing that xylophones and zebras were much more common.

he’s just not that into who?

I went to see the movie this evening and, well, I get it. Guys don’t mix their signals they just give you excuses for not being into you. For example, “You’re too perfect”, “Too successful/awesome”, “I just got out of a relationship”, “I’m not emotionally mature”, “I need work on myself”, blah, blah, bullshit. I guess its being considerate and saving a girls feelings, but maybe they are just too afraid to say it. The movie was pretty good, not your average chick flick. Slight emotional roller coaster, yet realistic. Basically, if a guy doesn’t either call/text/email/facebook/myspace/twitter/PIN/voicemail you, he is not interested. In our world there are so many forms of communication, why waste your time waiting for someone to reach you? Lesson learned – if they want to talk to you, they will. It mentioned how all those magical love stories your friends tell you to make you feel better are all exceptions to the rule. Are you the rule or the exception? Finally, the site for the movie is cute and entertaining. As for Jennifer Aniston and ScarJo, they both looked great.
