Day 630: Canadian Street Rod Nationals

Today I pulled out a vintage shirt that belonged to mum. Our parents had a hot rod shop when we were kids called ‘Toys For Boys‘ and they went to heaps of car shows. This is from the Candian Street Rod Nationals in 1979, before I was born. I love it so much, fav colour. This shirt and many of my other vintage hot rod shirts were made at Tiger Brand, a manufacturer that used to be in Cambridge, ON (hometown). It’s amazing that after 30+ years they’re all in perfect condition. My friend Jeremy used to be part of the company so I tagged him in my photo today. He ended up sending the screenshot to the family that owned it and this is the message I got back. Love it! I was gonna call this post ‘Tiger Brand’ but yesterday my title was ‘Eye of The Tiger‘ so that might be weird lol. In other news, I left my Apple Watch charger at the cottage and even though I ordered a new MagSafe charger, the thing will NOT CHARGE. Pretty sure it’s bc of the voltage but alas, another day without my watch. Will go to Apple tomorrow. This is the first time since getting my watch last December that I haven’t tracked my fitness. I hate it! I can’t believe I’ve become so attached to this little device. If you’re considering ordering one, DO IT. I love it so much. Got a manicure after work today and I can’t even begin to tell you how a small thing like that can really change everything. I feel put together again. HOPE YOUR WEEK IS GOING GREAT!

True Story: When Life Gives You Lemons

Today life game me a lemon. On my way to the office I crossed the road to find one single half lemon, squished, and all alone in the middle of the road. What did it mean, how did it get there?  I don’t know, I’ll never know. I decided to take a photo and have a little laugh to myself. It wasn’t like I was going to make lemonade or anything. Did some research on where this saying came from and many attribute it to Dale Carnegie from his book How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. Carnegie’s version reads, “If You Have a Lemon, Make a Lemonade.”  BUT, 8 years before Carnegie’s book the phrase made it’s way into the mainstream via this poetic rendition of the phrase entitled The Optimist which appeared in a 1940 edition of The Rotarian: “Life handed him a lemon, As Life sometimes will do. His friends looked on in pity, Assuming he was through. They came upon him later, Reclining in the shade In calm contentment, drinking A glass of lemonade.”[10] I thought this was all quite lovely. I left my little lemon squish and made a wish as I walked away with flowers in my hair.  Many would have missed this little lemon but I, I saw beauty in it’s simplicity and it made me smile. In the spirit of Throwback Thursday, here’s a photo of Jenie and I at the house where we grew up in Cambridge. Did had a hot rod shop called Toys for Boys so really rad cars were always around. We used to play in the garage w/ Dad and pretend to drive the cars around. Ahh, the good ol’ days. Remember, when life gives you lemons, you have lot of options of what to do with them. Do something that will put a smile on someone’s face,…

Cruise Control: Chevy Sonic, Hot Rods, Open Roads

Woke up pretty early and drove to Dad’s. It was so beautiful out yesterday, temp was about 4 degrees and I had the sunroof open. I’m completely in love with driving the Chevy Sonic. It’s small & zippy, good pickup I feel like it’s a little rally car. This is the exact  vehicle I won in September from Chevrolet Canada live on youtube. I’ve never really needed a car, I lived with parents and the beach in Australia before moving downtown Toronto. I mostly walk, ride bikes or streetcar everywhere I go. It’s my first time using Bluetooth to connect my phone to hands free calling or get directions using OnStar.  Hellooooo convenience!! Driven a few cars over the last year and one thing I really dig about the Sonic is that your phone charges while you drive when it’s plugged into USB. A few cars have USB now but they don’t all work to charge your device.  The back seat door handles are on the window making it look like a hatchback also has extra trunk space.  Driven heaps since Wednesday and still have gas too. The drive to Dad’s is nice country-ish roads. Tiny bit of snow in the backyard. After brekky got Dad to show us the garage and three cars he’s currently working on. My Dad builds hot rods and had a chassis shop when I was growing up called “Toys for Boys”. This pink rocket was my first car ever. He built it and Mum/him used to push Jenie and I around at car shows across North America when we were little. It’s dusty and needs a clean BUT IT HAS FLAMES. This one time a well known, cool car guy (Mum who?) said “Y’know kid, you got the best car on the lot” to me. Something like…

I have a thing for cars.

Saw this old Chevy truck in Mexico and it reminded me of Dad. When I was growing up I spent heaps of time round old cars as Dad owned a chassis shop called “Toys for Boys” where he custom built hot rods & cool cars like a pro street s10, as well as many others that would be now considered vintage. We always had people coming by the house with the sickest rides. I guess that’s where my love for nice cars comes from. Thanks Dad (and Mum of course!) 🙂 Next week I’ll be on the road driving the cute little Sonic from Chevrolet. Remember a couple months ago when I won A Sonic in Yonge Dundas Square LIVE on YouTube.ca? What a crazy experience. In January I’m attending the 2012 North American International Auto Show. Ford is sending 150 of the worlds top bloggers to NAIAS for a few days of press conferences, dinners, discussions & influencer activities. Can’t wait till my itinerary arrives to I can FW it to my Tripit app on iPhone. Mum informed me that I cisited the Ford Motor Company plant when I was a wee little kiddio. My how times flies!

you read it in the newspaper, ask your girlfriends and see if they know

Had ice cream at Ed’s Real Scoop in the Beaches today. Chocolate & homemade. So good.  I useally go for chocolate, nothing to fancy or with accessories. Carly gave me the great suggestion. Y’know Carly? She’s my friend/agent/blondetourage blog babe who moved to Florida last year and she’s COMING BACK this week. Yay. Gonna go driving to this album tomorrow. So many good songs. I was creeping Jack White… Did you know he is Scottish, Polish and Canadian descent. He’s quite fascinating if you don’t already know. This was a funny comic to get today, right after a wedding and all. Cheryl & Jared  had cheesecake. It was good. Tonmorrow I’m checking out all the nerdy tech stuff  about this Ford Fusion.  Maybe a car wash too. I have the Fusion Sport, black leather interior, 2.5L.  Fun car to drive.  I really like cars. Grew up hanging in the garage with Dad.  He builds hot rods. Had his own shop in Cambridge when I was growing up, “Toys for Boys”. Saw this today and thougt of you Dad. The Beaches are so pretty. Reminds me of where I grew up. Old houses, tall trees, narrow streets, sidewalk stairs, front porch. If I had a car full time I reckon I could live in the East End. (OMG, did I just say that?)  Queen West hipsters move to the East End when they grow up right? haha Would be rad to build/reno an old house here.  Fantastzed about that today, my car, my house, my street. I see my house and so can you. Dude at Amsterdam said this building on left is going to be a Loblaws. Saw a super old pic & Loblaws has owned it since before any other this stuff was built. I need to change the…

interview with a toy expert: hi, i am five years old.

This week I interviewed Riza Javellana, a Toy Expert at Mattel Canada. I asked questions I wanted to know. I am five year old inside and love toys and I refuse to lose the childlike sparkle in my eye. You will find it fun if you are wondering what the hell to get your sisters kids or your brother-laws cousin or that special munchkin in your life. 🙂 * natalie dee drawing What is the most “tech” toy out for kids this year? For girls, Barbie Video Girl has been a real hit. (I HAVE THIS! It’s awesome.) It enables girls KIDS to capture memories with a camera lens hidden in Barbie’s necklace and a colour LCD screen on her back. It’s movie-making from Barbie’s point of view. It is compatible with Windows and Mac and even comes with editing software, allowing kids to add music and graphics to their videos. I can imagine this product being a real hit for those kids who love singing to videos. It’s an all-in-one entertainment toy! What is the most popular toy this holiday season for boys, for girls? (both!) For boys, the Hot Wheels Criss-Cross Crash Track Set has been very popular. With four intersecting crash zones, it allows kids to line up their Hot Wheels cars and let them rip for near misses or total wipeouts. With more than 16 feet of track that includes hairpin turns, motorized boosters, and a giant crash zone, kids can enjoy crash and bash fun all holiday long. For girls, the entire line of Monster High has been a big hit! The new Monster High franchise was recently launched with doll characters who are modern teenage descendants of classic monsters. They are undergoing the trials and tribulations of high school. Characters include Draculaura, Clawdeen Wolf,…

i’d like a ride in a little deuce coupe

Happy it’s Friday, I mean Thursday. Nothing much planned for the weekend because I would really like to rest and be lazy and stay at home and show my TV some TLC. Saw these guys looking pretty in the sunshine on the way to work. When I was little my Dad had a hot rod shop called ‘Toys for Boys‘. That site is someone else in NSW, Australia but you get it. His shop was B.I. (Before Internet). He made some of the best hot rods around and worked with the now late Boyd Cottington. Dad also worked with the Horton team at Horton Street Rod & Parts in Breslau. Today’s sweatshirt features one of Dad‘s 32’s. I’m pretty sure Mum used to wear it.

If you didn’t know how old you were how old would you be?

So, my sister liked her presents! Gave Jenie a bunch of goodies last week but last night I gave her a few ‘special things’. The present she is opening in this video is a lint roller she bought last week at Walmart and left at my house. I thought it was REALLY funny to give back her own crap all wrapped nice. Moohaha. Sister fun. When we were kids Jenie and I used to wrap up things from around the house. Once I gave her a can of beans and toilet paper, she wrapped up a huge package of pads for me. What a joker! Earier in the day Mum and I had some fun at Maccas with Happy Meal toys. Mum always says she is really only about eight years old. Me too 🙂 After dinner Jenie and I went with the crew to Diwan the only bar open. We smoked hookah and danced Mediterranean style. It’s tradition to meet up with Sara and the boys when we’re all home for the holidays. Wonder what will be open tonight?!
