#twestivalTO 2011 – tweet. meet. give.

This photo means something really special to me. It reminds me how much I, we have grown and changed over the past couple years. Erin, Satish & I (below)  were on an aweosme team that came together in Jan. 2009 to create the first big Twitter event Toronto ever had. Twitter was slowly catching on at the time and the event was part of a global thing called Twestival. Last night, Twestival 2011 took place and it was awesome. It was a totally new team of people who took the initiative to create the event and I was proud and happy to be there. Twestival OG organizer group hug, my happy moment of the night. The first Twestival was at CiRCA and we donated to charity:water. Remember that place? My sis was there, she was a Raptors girl back then. She’s the blonde if you don’t already know/can’t tell. Once we had Twestival on a boat cruise. Renee you were missed last night, I had a shot for you. I need to get to SF to you v.soon. Another time we had Twestival at Tryst in the club district. See all the great pix Erin Leydon took last night here on flickr. My Olympus pix were not as great. I’m not familiar with the camera yet and had some issues. I’m used to having a point & shoot. Popped over to see Darren this morning and got a little grey-ness put into my hair. It’s on the runways this season and I really wanted to have it done before fashion week. Tonight is Twestival and I’m super excited to be surrounded by everyone tonight. Tickets are almost SOLD OUT. If you want one get it here. There’s over 400 people already attending. I’m giving away two tickets on @mtvcanada‘s Twitter today, we’ve had SO MANY RT’s! It’s awesome. Before I hit up the big part I’m stopping by Notable TV‘s launch of the brand new Samsung 3D TV with Sabrina. Booya. Stoked to see this in baby action. Ok, that’s all for now! Have an awesome day! The night was warm as over four hundred fine people walked the red carpet boarding the yacht. Toronto is full of do-gooders and together we surpassed our goal raising over $600o for Meal Exchange. Thank you everyone that purchased event tickets, raffle tickets and came out to have fun! Along with raising awareness of an awesome national student-founded, youth-driven charity, our donation will result in mentoring over 214 youth and providing over 7,500 meals to those in need. Thanks to Mariposa Cruise Lines for giving us a great spot to have a party and the Argo girls for coming out too. They’re lined up here to chat with Rob from Smojoe.com. Check out the photos from our wonderful photographers Rosa Park, Say Yeah, and Chris G. The next Twestival is in the new year and will an opportunity to tweet,meet and give for a global cause.  It will obviously be a night not to miss!  Have a great day. Twestival Update – dig that well!

On February 12th 2009 I was part of a team that put together Twestival Toronto (#twestivalTO). If you don’t know about Twestival I posted a bunch about it here and here. Our city was one of hundreds that took part to raise money for charity:water to drill wells in places where people did not have access to clean water. Toronto raised about $10,000 and all cities together raised about $250,000. The event was fun and I met a ton of great people because of it. I’m happy to share with you that Twestival well drilling has begun. This video is Day 1 in Ethiopia. It’s touching to see how happy the village is! Day 1 from Ethiopia from charity: water on Vimeo.

I helped out with TwestivalTO in February, an event that took place at CiRCA and was part of a world wide effort to raise money for Charity Water. Toronto raised over $10,000 and we had hundreds of people out. There’s some really huge Toronto party events happening this year, I’m stoked.  Our friends at Daily Challenge are doing something awesome and when they asked for me to join their team for the event, I was all in! The event is called Pay It Backward Day and the idea came from one of the earliest challenges for DC. It involves doing something nice and purchasing a drink for the person behind you in line (see image->). The goal is to beat Starbucks who have the current world record and get 500 people in a row to take part. It is on Saturday, April 4th at Queen & John, Second Cup. It’s right across the street from Much Music. The New Flow 93.5 will be broadcasting live, there will be all kinds of interesting stuff going on. I’ve never broken a world record, that I know of, and I would really like your help to do it. So come. Join in on FB. I took this pix-mix of our city on the way to work today – Toronto the GOOD!

It was awesome. Jenie & I are in this video along with a bunch of other Tweeps & peeps who attended TwestivalTO. Thank you to everyone who came out. I met HEAPS of totally cool people who were mobilized for the cause. We beat our goal and Twestival Toronto can build wells for communities without access to clean water. Great job!!

a BILLION, yes, a BILLION

Did you know that over a billion, YES A BILLION, people all over the world go without access to clean and safe drinking water everyday? That is 1 in every 6 people. Today you will find an article about Twestival on page 3 of the Toronto 24 Hours newspaper. Twestival has been on CNN, BBC and all kinds of other networks around the world. The Toronto response has been great, but we need more people out for the cause! Toronto is one of the MOST online cities and we can totally show the other 180 global cities participating, that Toronto is a strong community. I know we can show up Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Moncton, Montreal and Vancouver by having a bigger party and raising more for the cause! We are looking to sell another 200 tickets! If you can’t attend the event, purchase a ticket and show your support. Get them here!The Twestival is organized 100% by volunteers in cities around the world and 100% of the money raised from these events will go directly to support charity: water projects. This image is a tag cloud of all my contacts on Twitter and what they do. The largest words are the ones that show up the most (in case you are unfamiliar with this kind of thing!). It is evident that the most predominate are 1. social 2. media 3. marketing. I find that the amount of new stuff I learn each day is greatly increased by following these people. Its a lovely day in the city of Toronto and I took the time to enjoy it. I went for a sun filled walk on the West side and stopped by some shops. I’m working on a few things for Twestival today and really looking forward to Thursday night at Circa. I hope you have your tickets! Molson is buying your first drink and there are heaps of prizes to be won. The event is four days away and the TwestivalTO fundraising goal is $10,000.
