Earlier this week I wrote about the many relationships I’ve had with hardware, computers that is. The track record of breakage expands further than computers, it includes phones and cameras too. I can’t even begin to think about all the units I’ve been though over the last few years.
I look forward to getting to work now that I’ve got a new desktop that stays there. It’s safe from the wreckage that I cause every time a laptop touches my fingers. As I was leaving for the office this morning, I noticed the balcony door open and casually grabbed for the screen door to avoid any bugs coming inside. There’s lots up high in condo-life. I attempted to close the door when my blackberry jumped out of my hand. He must have wanted to go. I tried to stop him, but there was no way. He was full of spite and skid across the concrete heading straight for the edge. I screamed as if I was being pushed to the very edge myself. It was loud and full of fear. I tried to say ‘don’t do it’ but he jumped, he just jumped. He went right off the edge as if he was at Taupo doing a bungy. Thought flushed my mind thinking, what have I done, what have I not done to make you want to end it all? I watched the whole thing happen. I saw him falling over 20 stories to what became a very tragic death. I scurried to the elevator, it seemed to be taking a lifetime. I could not get to the ground fast enough. I saw a resident walk past him, his parts were scattered across the pavement. I wiped a tear and said ‘WHAT AM I GOING TO WITHOUT YOU?” in an angry yet very sad voice. I picked him up and he seemed to still have some life left. ..I got all the pieces and held him close. There was no hope, he was not going to make it. Not after a fall like that.
Emptiness filled my stomach as thoughts raced through my head. Another breakup to add to the rest. It’s been a tough week, I lost two very special friends, laptop and blackberry. I hope the relationship in this beautiful photo lasts longer than the ones I have with gadgets.
It must be time to switch to iphone…
oh no! That's the worst. I'm sorry for your lost. But on the bright side now it's upgrade time 🙂
bummer. i once dropped my in a can of paint.
I still remember the day my first blackberry died. It was the summer of 2004. We were standing in the bathroom. I had just washed my hands (but had not dried them yet). I pulled my blackberry out of its holster to read an email and when I put it back in the holster, my shirt got stuck – I tried to use the hand I was holding it with to pull my shirt away and put my blackberry back. I used the mirror to help to see what had to be done, but I let it slip, and when I tried to catch it, I failed and dropped it. I watched in horror as the screen cracked. I reached down to pick it up and watched the screen turn funny colours and ooze…
There may have been a tear or two – it was nothing short of tragic. Although, in 2004 a blackberry was a $900 investment with a three year contract, and I had it insured. Within two weeks, a new one arrived, it was built to last.
I named it and we were good for years, until a sleeker, more powerful, colour screen model came out.
If fact when I was in Newfoundland for work, we made a special trip to Signal Hill together, and I asked the cab driver who I turned into my tour guide (this happens when you travel alone) to take a couple of pictures of me sending and receiving wireless signals where it all began over a hundred years ago.
I'm now on my sixth smart phone – three of the old ones live in a desk drawer remembering the good times. Two were retired, one died, and the other two were returned to either an employer or the manufacturer.
OK – my story isn't as good, but I can appreciate the tragedy that is the loss of a blackberry, and certainly the way in which you eulogized yours.
Yeah, maybe that's Jesus telling you to upgrade. Too bad you have to deal with rogers if your'e gonna get an iphone. Those scumbags.
@laforet I really enjoyed your comment. It's amazing how attached we get to the little guys!
@seanward yeah, Rogers….Hopefully they'll be nice to me. I'm sure nice to them giving them money all the time!
Have fun using the Rogers automated customer service robot. when I had rogers for internet, they called me. They were doing a survey about the automated customer service robot. And this poor girl, you could hear the tremble in her voice cuz everyone all day had been so delighted to finally get to speak to a person about the customer service robot. I don't think that survey respondents had been particularly postive in their feedback.
i hate the rogers robot. we call her simone. she also does elevators that bitch.
She probably does it in elevators. What a slut!
