EVENTS

Art Battle

An instant hit with show goers last year, Art Battle joins the exhibition floor on the evening of Friday, February 19 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. This crowd-pleasing live art show will have guests immersed in rounds of 20 minute competitive painting where 16 rtists take show goers through their creative process. Members of the audience can vote for their favourite work and can later bid in a silent auction to purchase the artwork.

UNTAPPED Emerging Artists Competition presented by DeSerres

One of the most popular features, Artist Project together with DeSerres gives recognition to 20 emerging artists through the UNTAPPED Emerging Artists Competition. Dedicated to the development of students, new graduates, and self-taught artists, this juried competition will provide a platform for emerging artists to launch their artwork at a professional level art fair for free. One of the 20 artists will be awarded a free booth at Artist Project 2017.

Road Trip Artist Competition

This year, Artist Project invites artists to submit an original work of art based on the interpretation of the theme “Road Trip.” This theme will explore the idea of journey, adventure, and travel as a documentary experience. All competition entries will be on display in a feature area. Selected by a panel of judges, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners will receive cash prizes. Guests of the exhibit can also vote in the People’s Choice Award for their favourite entry in the Road Trip Artist Competition and be automatically entered to win $250 towards a work of art and a pair of tickets to the Opening Night Party at Artist Project 2017.

Installation Zone

Another draw of this year’s Artist Project is the Installation Zone featuring large scale sculpture and conceptual art. A highlight includes Melbourne-based artist, Rushdi Anwar’s installation dubbed ‘Irhal (Expel), Hope and Sorrow of Displacement.’Originally from Kurdistan, Anwar’s large scale installation of 25 stacked and burnt wooden chairs reflects on the socio-political unrest in his home country and his heritage.

Performance Art

OCAD University’s Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers is thrilled to partner with Artist Project to present Adam Filek’s sculpture and performance as part of the Career Launchers program.  Hovering between performance and living sculpture, Filek’s Walking and Talking Stones is an investigation into the origins of being, brought forward by careful yet spontaneous exploration between the body and stone. As a durational performance, performers will hold various poses with stones, attempting to force relationships between the animate and inanimate, and to consider stone as something that lives, breathes, and of course, moves.
