You can’t fly with the eagles if you’re with the seagulls.

Title is advice from Mum. She said that to me a few years ago when I was trying to sort out where I wanted to go with my life. I always thought I wanted to work in fashion, then I did. After that, I thought wearing a suit, working long hours and being part of the downtown financial district was my dream. I stayed in that job as an IT recruiter having meetings at 8am (yeah omg, it was hell) and 2pm every single day. I hated it so much (job not the people!). One day my boss said “Casie, it doesn’t seem like you are having fun?” I replied “No, I’m not having fun at all. I badly want to quit but I need two weeks pay”. I left at the end of that very day, cheque on the way and started a job at Toronto’s most famous Kiwi restaurant shortly after. I knew the owner (HI MARTIN) and that because of my Kiwi citizenship I had a bloody good chance of getting hired. Working in the bar gave me the freedom (and same money TBH) to do what I wanted with my time. It was stress free and I loved chatting to the regulars and new customers. I worked at Hemingways for a few months and met some really rad people, it was like a family there. One of my recruiter friends sent me on an interview and moved into a job in IT. I worked for an online casino (it was cool, we had catered lunches) for two years and despite almost getting fired for doing it, worked on my blog A LOT. If my old boss reads this he will totally be shaking his head. Thanks Mike! When they caught on to all my blog activity, I decided…

flock of eagles

It really does not matter what you have, what you had, want, or what you own. You are whoever you want to be. How you perceive yourself has the biggest impact on how others perceive you, this is my belief and something I live. It was my dear mum that ingrained in me, “just because you don’t have money, doesn’t mean you can’t compete, you just have to be more creative”. Luckily for myself, I’ve always been rich in that department. The book in this post is one that I really, truly love and admire. It is written by Paul Arden one of the world’s top advertising guys who comes from a great career with Saatchi & Saatchi. This is not merely a ‘book‘, this is a bible for the creative, those driven to succeed who couldn’t even ever imagine what it’s like to ‘think inside the box‘. It has taught me tools to succeed in the world, to dream the unimaginable, to break the rules, and make my own path, leaving trails for others to follow. This book is about stretching the mind and thinking about where you want to be in the world. Do you want to be well known? The best in your field? Your country? Best in the world? Or best in the universe? You decide. I know where I want to be. Posted on September 26, 2008 Can’t Fly with the Eagles if You’re with the Seaguls – Mum

you can’t fly with the eagles if you’re with the seagulls

Met Louis Lautman last night at Notable TV’s premiere of The YES Movie. I asked him to tell you about the movie since it’s his movie [see video]. He said it’s kinda like The Secret on steroids meets MTV. Would really like to know if the young peeps in the movie have blogs, Tweet etc.  Also, making lotsa money like that, these kids should be rocking serious style/designer shit.  Was surprised at the style, I expected more savy! Watched part of the movie today. Couldn’t make it last night, stopped by to see Raymi before #genyto #canLit. Nice guy, very tall and says ‘theater’ with an accent. He started the Young Entrepreneur Society, so naturally  I chatted him about entrepreneurship. I’m really into the big E. I firmly believe and know I can have anything I want , this is my life. He also told me he didn’t know how to spell ‘entrepreneurship’ for a long time, said lots of people have trouble with it. I’ve never had that problem. I won Young Entrepreneur of Cambridge when I was 15 for starting a publishing company. Little did I know then I’d become a modern daily internet  daily social publisher.  I spend lotsa my time going to these events, Tweetups, Genyto, etc these babies are really all about a crowd, a crown full of entrepreneurial thinkers. Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing. B.Franklin Watched one of Lou’s (can I call you Lou?) video on the YES Ning network and it was about internship and inspiring. I always wanted to intern somewhere really cool but those days passed. In the year 2000 I worked work at a marketing company sorting catalogs for the summer.  Boring. Really excited to be mentoring about 6 girls from PR at Humber College.…

circling round the buildings like really big eagles

The jets start flying again, its the last time I will hear them for about 36o days. Ate some chips. Oreos. Watching Confessions of  GoGo Dancer, seems it’s pretty easy for a girl to get mixed up in the wrong crowd. The internet addiction centre opened in Washington. I wrote a long post and it deleted for some reason. I guess that means I should get off the internet and go outside. Been browsing Tumblr while watching cheezy tv all day. Big Daddy is on now. Tit’s McGee, haha. I was browsing some photos, these are all from September’s. Enjoy your day off everyone. It’s beauty out 🙂

you took something perfect and painted it red

A wee bit of stress is starting to sink in. I’m over film festing and focussed on New Zealand Fashion Week. I’m feeling quite artistic and looking forward to the plane ride. I love airports, people travelling. In my carry on I’ll have netbook, notebook, sketchbook, nintendo, pillow and blanket. Watched this little video again today, I think it’s so cute. Time lapse, I love. I got a heap of clothes from Mark’s yesterday, yes, the Work Warehouse. You might be surprised how stylish. It was really fun trying on anything and everything before deciding on what I’d like to wear. One of my fav’s is this long black super soft cardigan. You can never have too many cardigans, perfect for all year. I got a pair of mom jeans, red gloves and grey leather riding boots too. This vid is kinda cute too, the music is Yelle. Been listening to her this morning. Last night’s movie Jucy was really really good. I am so happy I got to meet the girls from the movie before seeing it. Really make a difference when you get to up close with the actors. I related to them and gave them huge hugs after it was over. Post movie I met up with Morgan for a coffee. He played me a few songs from his solo album coming out in the new year. Impressed. Mum used to tell me”You can’t fly with the eagles if you’re with the seagulls” and I like that. I’m surrounded by so many inspiring/talented people, it motivates me to work hard; to wake up early, to get things done, to be organized, to follow up, to be thankful. Have a wonderful day friends. Do something that inspires you today. Do something for you, do something for others. Giving…

SOAR HIGHER

One of the most fav things Mum ever said to me is “you can’t fly with the eagles if you’re with the seaguls”. I think about that when I look at my feather tattoo and think SOAR HIGHER. Remember when I used to talk about the Flock of Eagles?

changing the face & < body > language of advertising

Today I went to FW and I was a media, a real media. Being there challenged/changed any old thoughts I had of how Fashion Week goes down. The internet makes everything instant. I imagine the days when clothes are shown IN season and made to order online from the runway via mobile and delivered shortly after … ah, a girl can dream can’t she? I was in the media room often doing work (otherwise known as FB & Tweets) for MuchMTV. I was surrounded by bloggers and traditional media, however, quite impressed by bloggers. Filling up seats and sitting amongst Elle, Flare and the league of fashion then going straight back to little laptops updating blogs with photos hot off the runway.  Think of all the people it takes to produce something the ‘old way’ (photo, write, produce, edit, post) then a blogger comes along and is this all-in-one media publishing station. It’s truly amazing. Saw this video today via Marketing Mag basically, there’s NO FUTURE if you’re not going digital. I mean, that’s only true if you wanna advertise anything to anyone, ever. Duh, get up on it; power to the people! Did you know that half of FB’s 400 million users check in EVERYDAY? Take that to the bank. That’s like heaps. The Last Advertising Agency On Earth from FITC I’m a huge Saatchi fan for years but mostly since that book I told you about a couple times, remember? I used to dream about working there. Looks like CGI is doing a good job of listening/paying attention…my Tweet showed up on their homepage today retweeting a photo re: Barbie’s show on Wednesday at LGFW. Matel is one of their clients 😉 Most excited for that show to be honest, fingers crossed for gift bags! Yeaw! :: people…

don’t hold back, you can fly kid, you can

Don’t doubt yourself. Don’t hold back. Just go. Just do it. Don’t stand in your way. Live. Live it out. Go all the way. Be free. Throw your arms up and over your head. Look up at the sky. Reach for it. Your dreams aren’t that far away. If you can see them you can reach them. You can achieve them. You can fly kid. You can. Stretch out those arms and soar like an eagle. “You can’t fly with the eagles if you’re with the seagulls.”

eagle preparing to fly

Before I fly I always get a little bit of anxiety. I’ve always been with someone when I’ve flown and this time I was meeting friends in Florida and flew by myself.  To make sure I was ready I put on my chain with a star and eagle feather. I added a Tiki that Dad brought me back from NZ to the chin before I left too. I’ve been working on a project called Flock of Eagles and the eagle feather makes me feel strong. I also put on bracelets from Mum that traveled all the way from New Zealand.  That way I had a little bit of family with me. I also made sure I got tanned up and toned up my muscles. The flight was smooth and I arrived to the hot sun in just over 3 hours. More posts coming soon about trip etc.

Give Climate a Chance

I watched this ad and could not help but be touched by it.I saw it on Moby’s blog, he writes alot. It makes me feel sad more than anything to think about the polar bears and how it affects them and there is nothing that THEY can actually do. We have to. Will we be able to save them from becoming extinct?I believe that fighting Global Warming is extremely important. Here is a link to an article on theEnvironmental Defense Fund site about ‘Global Warming Myths and Facts‘. I found it to be quite interesting, including the PDF with all the signatures form the Gleneagles G8 Summit in 2005.
